Beauty and Sadness is the second EP by The Smithereens, released in June 1983 on Little Ricky Records. For Beauty and Sadness, The Smithereens enlisted producer Alan Betrock and engineer James A. Ball to handle the production at New York’s Record Plant.
Beauty and Sadness (Japanese: 美しさと哀しみと Utsukushisa to kanashimi to) is a 1964 novel by Japanese author Yasunari Kawabata. Opening on the train to Kyoto, the narrative, in characteristic Kawabata fashion, subtly brings up issues of tradition and modernity as it explores writer Oki Toshio's reunion with a young lover from his past, Otoko Ueno, who is now a famous artist and recluse.
The Smithereens' debut EP, originally released in a tiny run on a small New York indie in 1983, sounds like a dry run for the far superior full-length debut, 1986's Especially for You. However, of the five songs on this EP, one is merely an instrumental remix of the title track, two are forgettable trifles (the "Much Too Much" and "Some Other Guy," which isn't the British Invasion staple made famous by the Beatles and others), and only two hint at singer/songwriter Pat DiNizio's blossoming talent.
