Find out more about the interesting and diverse histories of the lines running across our Tube network. London Underground's history dates back to 1863 when the world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway, opened between Paddington and Farringdon serving six intermediate stations. The line was the first automatic passenger railway in the world, fully equipped with an Automatic Train Operation system (ATO).

The London Underground comes out to Heathrow in the form of the Piccadilly Line. The big attraction is price, frequency and speed. It takes 45-60 minutes to reach most hotels in Central London with trains around every 5 minutes. The Underground carriages become grossly overcrowded during peak rush hours. Heathrow is the first stop so you will get a seat, however, getting off in Central London with lots of luggage at peak times maybe is an experience you can do without after a long flight.

Journey time by Tube is under an hour and you shouldn't have to wait longer than ten minutes for a train, even off-peak. Where to catch trains. The single cash fare to central London (Zone 1) is £. 0. A one-day Travelcard, giving unlimited travel in Zones 1-6, costs £1. 0 (Anytime) or £1. 0 (off-peak). For more information visit tf. ov. s or visit the Travel Information Centre at Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 underground station. Oyster pay-as-you-go fares are £. 0 (Mon - Fri, 06:30 - 09:30) and £. 0 (all other times).

Here is my collection of the London Underground voice announcements. This post has been significantly updated twice (in March 2014 and in May 2016). I still don’t have any announcements from the Metropolitan and Waterloo & City lines, and the DLR. Car line diagrams source: Transport for London. The Mind the Gap announcement. First of all, the famous Mind the Gap announcement: Mind the Gap. Bakerloo line. Here the Northern Line announcement is shortened. I thought it was because the whole announcement was getting too long, but hold on. The next station is Euston. Doors will open on the right-hand side. The train now standing at Platform 1 is the 10:17 London Overground service to Euston calling at Kilburn High Road, South Hampstead and Euston. The next train to arrive at Platform 2 is the 10:19 Bakerloo line service calling all stations to Elephant and Castle.

The London Underground, or the Tube as it is often called, is the oldest underground train network in the world. Opened in 1863 there are a total of eleven lines, 270 stations and over 400 km of track, making it the third longest subway system in the world.

The Underground is divided into nine zones: central London is covered by zone 1. There are 11 Tube lines. The Tube fare depends on how far you travel, time of day, and how you pay. Oyster or contactless payments are the cheapest ways to pay for single fares. Tube services usually run from 5am until midnight, with Night Tube services on some lines on Friday and Saturday evenings

This marked the birth of London Underground. On 10 January, the Metropolitan Railway opened the world’s first underground railway. The railway was built between Paddington (which was called Bishop’s Road back then) and Farringdon Street. Many more lines would be added to the Underground railway network over the years, but most of it was developed over the next 50 years. In 1869, the first steam train travelled through the Thames Tunnel. Given that there were no ventilation shafts to let the smoke out of the tunnel - as it was built underneath a river! - lots of smoke built up inside the tunnel, meaning that it wasn't very nice for the train drivers working in it. It wasn't until 1913 that the rail would be made electric. Funs facts you may not know about the London Underground.
