Beast is the debut album of Canadian band Beast. While it has been physically released in Canada, international releases have not been announced.

Beast is the debut album of Canadian band Beast.

Other than that, this Beast of an album (pun intended) is pure Devildriver; just what I like to hear. The drumming has improved drastically. The album mixer did a great job of making the drums sound powerful and unrelenting without making them overpower the rest of the band by drowning everything out. The vocalist that has a tattoo for a beard (that I still can’t get used to) has one of the most unique mid-range growls that have a strong yelling sound (which is part of what contributes to their thrash metal sound)

Beast cover a variety of styles here; One minute you get acoustic/dreamy folk/psych, the next it's heavy and electric, followed by jazz excursions (50's style, Dixie, & ragtime!) and country. This Beast is full of surprises employing flute and keyboards, which make for some very cool instrumental passages. That said, the album as a whole is also rather short in length, with side 1 clocking in at maybe 15 mins. Side 2 might be 17 mins at best.

Pretty decent slice of psychedelic rock. Mine is a Canadian pressing manufactured and distributed by Quality Records Canada on the Evolution label.Beast cover a variety of styles here; One minute you get acoustic/dreamy folk/psych, the next it's heavy and electric, followed by jazz excursions (50's style, Dixie, & ragtime!) and country. This Beast is full of surprises. For example, the 2nd cut on side 1 titled "Communication" (my personal favourite) is a fairly lengthy full-blown psych/hard rocker, while taking a few jazz turns as well..employing flute and keyboards, which make for some very cool instrumental passages. But as side 1 winds down, suddenly we're confronted with some acoustic countrified folk music. For some, this eclectic surprise element might add to the whole experience...while to others it might distract. Surprisingly, the album is recorded/mixed quite well all things considered. My vinyl copy is virtually brand new, and plays dead silent without any surface noise. This really helps capture all the sonic layers throughout this psychedelic sound-scape.As for side 2? Much the same...more groovy psychedelic music...sometimes heavily distorted lead guitars accompanied by whirling Hammond organ. Admittedly, I feel some of the shorter cuts (2 min and less) are just filler, plain and simple. These abrupt interludes act as segues to the next song, and may annoy some listeners. Obviously there wasn't enough "good" material, ie; the song "Communication", so bring on the filler in an attempt to complete the album. That said, the album as a whole is also rather short in length, with side 1 clocking in at maybe 15 mins. Side 2 might be 17 mins at best. Remove the aforementioned "filler" tracks, and we're left with roughly 20 minutes of great psychedelic music. The back cover art-work is quite basic; A solid black background with "BEAST" written at the top. Beneath that are the words "Higher...& Higher!", followed by the band lineup. Below that reads; "all the seats have been taken, but you can sit here on the floor". No doubt a lyric from one of the songs. I've just never been able to figure out which one. The album was produced by the band, and recorded by Norman Petty at Petty Sound Studios, Clovis, New Mexico.
