Background information. He later went solo and recorded "The Birds And The Bees" in 1965, on the Era Records label. The single went to Number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year, and Number 2 on the Cash Box chart. It reached Number 29 in the UK Singles Chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. But the follow-up, "Georgie Porgie" only reached Number 68. Akens toured regularly since 1965 and included a tribute to his mentor, Sam Cooke, in most of his shows.

The Birds and the Bees (Jewel Akens song). The Birds and the Bees" was a 1964 single release by Jewel Akens with a lyric based on the "birds and the bees" idiom commonly referenced with regard to affording young people their introductory sex education. An international hit in 1965, "The Birds and the Bees" was reminiscent of such 1950s' honky tonk-style hits as "Blueberry Hill" by Fats Domino and "Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison.
Jewel Akens, who'd previously sung with the Four Dots, was given The Birds and the Bees in late '64 and turned it into the biggest hit of his career; that classic is here with Jewel's other hit, Georgie Porgie, plus Tic Tac Toe and more of his best! Track Listings. A couple of months later, in May, he then had Georgie Porgie top out at 68 Hot 100 b/w Around The Corner (From My House) on Era 3142, followed in August by the 120 Hot 100 Bubble Under, It's The Only Way To Fly, which would be his last nationally-charting side b/w You Sure Know Hot To Hurt A. Guy on Era 3147. Another album cut, (Sukiyaki) My First Lonely Night also emerged as a single on Era 3164, but it's B-side, Mama, Take Your Daughter Back, is not here. Completely missing are the 1965 single You Don't Need A Crowd b/w I've Arrived (Era 3156) and one released in 1969 - Buenos Aires b/w Mississippi Syrup Sopper on Era 104.
Album: The Best of Jewel Akens, 2007. In 1965, Jewel Akens had an international hit with the catchy pop track "The Birds & The Bees". Here in Australia, it charted across the country. This was the follow-up single. It was released in Australia in 1965 on a London 45, HL 2229.
