But the album and the band were square pegs culturally-neither downtown cool nor Southern-rock sprawl, too dirtbag to be sex symbols, too nice to be dirtbags. There’s an eccentricity to the first album, Petty told biographer and former Del Fuegos guitarist Warren Zanes. It doesn’t sound like anything else from the time. Eclectic might be a better word than eccentric. In 1974, Tom Petty moved from Gainesville, Florida, to Hollywood with his new wife Jane and his band Mudcrutch, who were signed to esteemed British producer Denny Cordell’s Shelter Records and then dropped before an album was even made. Shelter kept Petty on as a solo artist but he brought along Mudcrutch’s guitarist Mike Campbell-Petty’s closest collaborator for the entirety of his career-and keyboardist Benmont Tench, and added fellow Gainesville transplants, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch to start from scratch under the new name.

Holy cow! White Rhino! This piece of wax is absolutely marvelous. The back up vocals on Breakdown! Oooooooh weeeeee! The sound is full, the bass and guitar are warm and pleasant and the clarity is amazing, I can here each instrument shine through. No pressing flaws on this reissue, super clean pressing.
