Hotter than July is the nineteenth album by American recording artist Stevie Wonder, originally released on Motown's Tamla label on September 29, 1980. It was certified platinum and reached number three on the US Billboard chart. This was his most successful album in the UK, peaking at number two and producing four top ten singles. The first, third and fourth single were released with music videos.

Solid songwriting, musicianship, and production are evident in the majority of Hotter Than July. Wonder also carries on his tradition of penning songs normally not associated with his trademark sound, from the disco-tinged "All I Do" (originally planned to be released by Tammi Terrell almost ten years previously) to the reggae-influenced smash "Master Blaster (Jammin)," which went straight to the top of the R&B charts. While admittedly there are a few less-than-standard tracks, he closes the album on an amazing high note with one of the most aching ballads in his canon.

There’s unbridled joy and plenty of sweat on this buoyant 1980 album. On the Bob Marley-inspired reggae track Master Blaster (Jammin’), every instrument sounds like it's on springs, as Wonder makes a jubilant plea for unity. At the other end of the spectrum, Lately is one of his most aching ballads, with intimate vocals and a melancholy feel, while the ebullient Happy Birthday, a tribute to Martin Luther King J. is impossible to listen to without a smile on your face. Hotter Than July Stevie Wonder. There’s unbridled joy and plenty of sweat on this buoyant 1980 album. On the Bob Marley-inspired reggae track Master Blaster (Jammin’), every instrument sounds like it's on springs, as Wonder makes a jubilant plea for unity

Hotter than July is the nineteenth album by Stevie Wonder, originally released on Motown's Tamla label on September 29, 1980. Despite the wide critical acclaim for Wonder's previous works such as Songs in the Key of Life and Innervisions, Hotter than July was his first album eligible for platinum status, as Motown sales records before 1977 were not audited by the RIAA.

If Hotter than July doesn’t rank with Wonder’s greatest albums (Innervisions, Talking Book, Songs in the Key of Life), it certainly shows that the thread of his genius wasn’t seriously unraveled by the pantheistic peregrinations of Journey through the Secret Life of Plants.
