Aqua regia is a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, optimally in a molar ratio of 1:3. Aqua regia is a yellow-orange (sometimes red) fuming liquid, so named by alchemists because it can dissolve the noble metals gold and platinum, though not all metals. Aqua regia is primarily used to produce chloroauric acid, the electrolyte in the Wohlwill process for refining the highest quality (9. 99%) gold.

Aqua Regia is a mixture of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and water. This particular formulation is dilute aqua regia mixed as 2 parts water:3 parts 37% HCl:1 part 70% HNO3. Those percentages (37%, 70%) are the concentration of the HCl and HNO3 stocked by the lab – so the stock bottles have 37% HCl and 70% HNO3 in them – you should mix the solution using 2:3:1 of the constituents as poured out of the stock bottles. Equipment: One glass Petri dish, two 250 mL glass beakers, 100 mL polypropylene graduate cylinder for acid, two 1000 mL glass beakers (for rinse), stainless steel tweezers, PTFE (Teflon) wafer holders or sample holders. Chemicals: DI water, Hydrochloric Acid, Nitric Acid.

Aqua regia is a highly corrosive mixture of acids. It can be used to clean glassware since it dissolves any metal and trace organic compounds. Aqua regia is also used to remove noble metals such as gold, platinum and palladium from substrates. Aqua regia must be prepared and used in a fume hood. To prepare, combine three (3) parts of hydrochloric acid to one (1) part nitric acid in a glass container. The hydrochloric acid must be measured into the glassware first, and then the nitric acid is slowly added. Never exceed 38% nitric acid.

The mix of concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acids in aqua regia exists in an equilibrium. The equilibrium only begins moving to the right when the acids are very concentrated. Even heating 30% conc HCl with NaNO3 will give off some brown fumes. If very dilte solutions are used, the gold sometimes separates out forming a yellowish film on the sides of the test tube. Different Types of Aqua Regia. A mix of nitric and hydrochloric acids, known as "aqua regia", is well known for being able to dissolve gold. There is, however, a different acid combination that can be used to dissolve gold, and the interesting thing about this reaction is that the gold will reappear after the dissolved solution of gold is diluted in water! This reaction, however, involves much more concentrated acids, and the procedure is much more dangerous.

Aqua regia (Royal water in Latin) is a very strong acid. It is made by mixing one part concentrated nitric acid and three parts concentrated hydrochloric acid. The acid was named by alchemists because it can dissolve the noble metals gold and platinum. Tantalum, iridium and a few other metals are not dissolved by it. Aqua regia was discovered around 1300 AD, by the European alchemist Pseudo-Geber, when he mixed common salt with vitriol (sulphuric acid).

Aqua regia is a very strong acid formed by the combination of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid, both of which are strong acids. It is generally used to remove metals like gold and platinum from substances, especially in microelectronics and micro-fabrications labs. Platinum being dissloved in hot aqua regia.
