Only for completionists (3%). A precious jewel kept hidden from mortal ears for almost 20 years - this album was not released after being recorded in 1973 because the label feared a commercial failure. CAN's "Delayed" record was made in 1968 but not released until 1981. This OS MUTANTES album was not released until 20 years after it was recorded in 1973. This was recorded because of an obligation to their record label to make one more album. Rita Lee their singer had just left the band and the label was not too confident that this album would do well commercially, so they didn't release it.
Os Mutantes is the debut eponymous album by the Brazilian tropicalia band. It was originally released in 1968 by Polydor and influenced by traditional Brazilian music styles, as well as American and British bands. The album includes a cover of The Mamas & The Papas' "Once Was a Time I Thought", translated into "Tempo no Tempo", and a cover of "Le premier bonheur du jour", previously recorded by Françoise Hardy.

Two tracks, "O Relogio" and "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour," work through pastoral French pop, sounding closer to the Swingle Singers than Gilberto Gil. Though not all of the experimentation succeeds - the languid.

Os Mutantes – "A" E O "Z". Label: Polysom – 33243-1. The songs of the album are amazing, prog Mutantes at its best, but the quality of the pressing is terrible. The audio was poorly digitally mastered, therefore there's a enormous lack of presence in the sound. That might explain the grooves in the record, which are very weird, they look like a lot superficial.

Subsequently the band moved in a progressive rock direction with the album O A e o Z, recorded in 1973 but released only in 1992 due to disagreement with the record company. Arnaldo left the band in that year to pursue a solo career due to differences with other band members and problems with the abuse of LSD, followed by Dinho and, a year later, Liminha. Arnaldo subsequently was institutionalized and jumped from the building's window, causing a six-week coma. Sérgio Dias, the only remaining original member, led the band until its dissolution in 1978
