Patent Pending was created by Ryan McKenzie, a founder of the Simmer Group, a marketing and design firm with offices nearby. For his own bar inside the Radio Wave Building, he created a brand with numerous references to Nikola Tesla, the electrical inventor who lived there when it was the Gerlach Hotel. The Radio Wave Building, a handsome city landmark, is situated on a busy commercial street lined with wholesale importers and a cheap hotel. By day, the small basement-level space operates as a third-wave coffee shop called Patent Coffee.

Patent Pending" is a science fiction short story by English writer Arthur C. Clarke, first published in 1954. It was also published as "The Invention". It later appeared in his collection Tales from the White Hart. Patent Pending" is a frame story, purporting to recount a scientific tall tale told by a certain Harry Purvis at the (fictional) "White Hart" pub in London sometime in the 1950s, during a discussion of literary censorship (at the expense of the censors).
Patent Coffee + Patent Pending are fairly new to the New York City foodscape. A posh dual concept eatery in Nomad; housed in the vault of the Radio Wave building at 49 W 27 Street. The coupled coffee & cocktail bar have an identity and flavor – all its own. If it’s one thing New York City is abundant in, it’s food joints. In the city that never stops sipping & chewing, a spot that lacks character and punch is a spot that falls flat
During the daytime, Patent Pending is just a little coffee shop in Nomad. But at 5pm, they start seating people in a bar that’s hidden in the back. It’s a cool space, with a row of booths and a bar - but it isn’t very big, and it fills up quickly. They also only take reservations for parties of 4-6, so you should get here early if want a seat. The space itself is dark and candlelit, and you should bring either a date or a couple of friends when you want to hang out somewhere with good (albeit pricey) cocktails. Where we've featured it.
