The Gerry Mulligan Quartet recording Dragonfly, was released in October 1995 on the Telarc label, with special guests Dave Grusin, Grover Washington, J. John Scofield, Dave Samuels, and Warren Vache. In October 1995, Mulligan performed at the benefit concert: Concerto Per Essere Liberi, with the Tibetan Monks of the Sera Je Monastery in India, and Ornella Vanoni, at the Teatro Nazionale in Milan, Italy. It seems to be some kind of end-of-the-century improvised classical music. Gerry Mulligan was included on the Artists Committee for the 1995 Kennedy Center Honors for the Performing Arts, and in December he attended the ceremonies in Washington with his wife, Franca, including a reception at the White House, where they met Pres. and Mrs. Bill Clinton. Mulligan was again the winner of the Downbeat International Critics and Readers Poll: Baritone Saxophonist of the Year, 1995.
GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET DRAGONFLY Label: Telarc Recorded: May 30-31 and April 12-13, 1995 CD Released: 2008 Format:. Quote: On what was probably Gerry Mulligan's last studio album (recorded less than a year before his death), the great baritonist is heard still in prime form. But even with the guests, the focus is generally on Gerry Mulligan and his longtime quartet. The music is thoughtful and tasteful although it is doubtful if any of the tunes will ever catch on as standards. John Scofield and Dave Samuels played with me in a sextet in the seventies. Some of their solo interplay on this recording, especially "Backstage" and "Little Glory" is exquisite, and with the addition of Warren Vache to this group I fulfilled a dream I've had since the '70s. Warren, in my opinion, is the best cornet player anywhere.
John Scofield on guitar and Dave Samuels on vibes contribute nicely. This CD has over an hour of great cool jazz that should be appreciated by anyone interested - and should be added to the collections of all Mulligan fans. With Dave Grusin, John Scofield, and Grover Washington Jr. playing Soprano and Tenor Sax, it had to have some interesting music. The title cut is first, and is very tight and systematic. Secondly, compare the album to Mulligan’s justly acclaimed recordings with his acclaimed concert band (1960-62). The concert band, with Mel Lewis on drums, is much more propulsive and thus much sharper.
