Eugene "Jug" Ammons (April 14, 1925 – August 6, 1974), also known as "The Boss", was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Ammons studied music with instructor Walter Dyett at DuSable High School. Ammons began to gain recognition while still at high school when in 1943, at the age of 18, he went on the road with trumpeter King Kolax's band
A melancholy reading of "My Foolish Heart" was Ammons' first hit and sets the tone for the remainder of the material, which boasts an affecting, late-night atmosphere-the music absolutely marinates in echo, transcending the waking world into the dreamscape.

Sidemen to Gene Ammons are among others Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Don Byas, Stan Getz, Lester Young, and Georgie Auld, according to the liner notes. No full list of all musicians is provided (some more information about the individual tracks and their respective recordings seem to be provided in the Japanese notes on the insert sheet). The style is warm, rich and thoughtful, in a quiet mood, fitting the tenor saxophone style of the time of Mr. Ammons, who plays mostly standards and ballads here, all very slow and in a very romantic mood (hence the appropriate cover)
