8/3/2014 - I dug out my old organ sheet music and used it a lot to format this score when just played on the manuals (no pedal). The Brassin piano arrangement was used to help incorporate the pedal. Some of those passages are greatly enhanced (by Brassin, not me) over the original organ score to get a big organ sound from a piano and therefore impossible to play since some chord spreads are beyond the stretch of the hand for most people. For better or worse, I made a few modifications of my own to help get some of it back closer to the original organ score.

Uploaded on Jul 9, 2012. The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, is a piece of organ music attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. It is one of the most famous works in the organ repertoire. The attribution of the piece to Bach has been challenged since the 1980s by a number of scholars. BWV 565 exhibits a typical simplified north German structure with a free opening (Toccata), a fugal section (Fugue), and a short free closing section. As indicated by the accepted title of the piece, the Toccata and Fugue is in D minor. The Toccata begins with a single-voice flourish in the upper ranges of the keyboard, doubled at the octave. It then spirals toward the bottom, where a diminished seventh chord appears (which actually implies a dominant chord with a minor 9th against a tonic pedal), built one note at a time. This resolves into a D major chord, taken from the parallel major mode.

One of the greatest composers of all time. Bach wrote hundreds of pieces for organ, choir, as well as many other instruments. He spent most of his life as a church organist and a choir director. His music combines profound expression with clever musico-mathematical feats, like fugues and canons in which the same melody is played against itself in various ways.
