Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" is a song written and recorded by the British new wave band Culture Club. Released as a single in September 1982 from the group's platinum-selling debut album Kissing to Be Clever, it was the band's first UK hit. In the United States, the single was released in November 1982 and also became a huge hit, reaching for three weeks.

The four members of Culture Club wrote the songs for their first album Kissing To Be Clever together, with singer Boy George coming up with the lyrics. On this song, he later admitted that he wrote the lyrics about his relationship with their drummer Jon Moss. They had an affair for about six years that was kept hidden from the public, and George often felt hurt and emotional. At first, Boy George didn't want this released as a single because it was such a personal song for him. When it was released, it hit in 23 countries. He told Musician magazine in October 1983: "There's a line from 'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?' that says, 'Everything's not what you see,' which is basically what I believe. It's kind of boring when things are just what they ar. In the book 1000 UK Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Boy George said: "'Do You Really Want To Hurt Me' is a really well-constructed song.

Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" was the third single released in Europe by Culture Club and their debut release in the United States and Canada. The song was picked up by BBC Radio 2 and became a UK single for three weeks in October 1982. The song entered the American Pop chart the week ending December 4, 1982. In 2007, Boy George said that the song was "not just about Culture Club's drummer Jon Moss, my boyfriend at the time. Released as a remix version in France, to promote the compilation album Culture Club 2005 - Singles & Remixes, with new video). Charts and certifications.

This really hits their situation on the head. It just always surprised me that the group knew these songs were about Boy and Jon and were fine with it. Then Jon just performed in the songs as well without batting an eye (I guess liked being the muse). Flag Counterclockwerkon December 02, 2017.
