Duke is the tenth studio album by English rock band Genesis, released in March 1980 on Charisma Records. The album followed a period of inactivity for the band in early 1979. Phil Collins moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in an effort to salvage his failing first marriage, while Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recorded solo albums
This garage-folk duo from Seattle understands that when simple musical elements are balanced with good taste and clever arrangements, something uniquely huge and wonderful-sounding can happen. She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke was recorded on old lo-fi gear with ‘60s electric-guitar tones, tambourines, acoustic strumming, handclaps, woodwinds, airtight vocal harmonies and classic song crafting. Check the singing on "Reservoir Park" and you can imagine what it might have sounded like if one of the Davies brothers from the Kinks was a sister instead.
The 10-track album celebrates the time before those personalities became personas and those musical styles became canonical. The purity of spirit that Kimberly Morrison (the titular Dutchess) and Jesse Lortz (her childhood friend and Duke) bring to this spare collection of bluesy ditties makes them sound as strange and fresh as the Velvet Underground must've sounded to ears unaccustomed to their kind of menacing sexual deadpan, yet the duo injects their songs with just enough punk spirit to remind. us of how raw those early records really were
The album is a consistently entertaining listen from the opening chords and hand claps of "Reservoir Park" to the downtrodden tales of gypsies and the other miscreants that inhabit the songs of principles Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison. Standout tracks also include the Leonard Cohenesque "I Am Just A Ghost" and the eastern tinged "The Prisoner. 3 people found this helpful. Believe this - The Dutchess & The Duke have cooked up what might be the most perfect guitar pop record in years and years. The product description is pretty right on - the obvious sonic touchstones are the best of mid-60's rock - Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Dylan - with an emphasis on male/female two part harmony and some neat contrapuntal acoustic guitar parts.
That has been the lone consistent characteristic of her output, and it remains in effect throughout The Dutchess. An endurance test like few other pop albums issued during the early 2000s, The Dutchess has all the characteristics of a release fronted by someone who has been itching to go solo and prove herself, once and for all, as a versatile force all her own. Fergie does cartwheels and handstands, juggles three objects at once, balances books on her head, hangs upside down, rides a unicycle with her hands in the air - all these things while wearing different outfits.
