Elephant Man – The Complete Story of Joseph Merrick. Elephant Man – Complete Story of Joseph Merrick. One one of the most interesting Human Marvels is known as the Elephant Man. The times and tribulations of The Elephant Man, Joseph Carey Merrick, have long been the subject of books, films and theatre. As a result, ‘The Elephant Man’ is without a doubt the most famous human prodigy of all time. His story garnered the sympathy of Victorian England and after the span of one hundred years, his plight remains no less heart wrenching or inspiring.

At the end of The Elephant Man, it is presented as a conscious, life-ending decision, but as Merrick was alone when it happened that is more poetic license than verifiable fact. What is known is that his disease continued to progress over time, requiring more and more care from nurses under the guidance of Dr. Treves at the Royal London Hospital. A former People magazine Sexiest Man Alive, Cooper has followed fellow quondam Sexiest Men George Clooney and Brad Pitt in accumulating accolades for his acting chops. Coming off two years of back-to-back Oscar nominations, tackling a physical transformation as significant as that required to play Merrick may win him Tony attention as well.

Lynch takes The Elephant Man to a new level of technical aspiration with a dark, dank setting shot completely in black and white. This film is amazing and would undoubtedly be just okay any other way. The black and white adds to the story in a way that touches the audience much deeper and much more personal. The Elephant Man will stand the final test and it will be appreciated fully by future audiences, in much the same way as Citizen Kane had to wait for some decades until audiences were able to fully comprehend its greatness. 97 out of 110 found this helpful. With The Elephant Man, Lynch is saying to the world that it is society that is the monster, not the freaks that live within it. To put it simply: David Lynch has taken a story that could have easily been told simply and expanded it to take in themes that are outside of the central premise.

Joseph Merrick, known as "The Elephant Man" in Victorian England, led a tragic life whose severe deformities made him a sideshow attraction. While Joseph Merrick may only be remembered as "The Elephant Man," the full story of his life is as tragic as it is shocking. Imagine as a new parent having a beautiful and healthy baby boy. Now imagine, at age five, your child’s appearance starting to change in gruesome ways. His once perfect lips swell up. His pink skin thickens and turns a sickly gray hue.

Depicted as half man, half elephant, poor Joseph was displayed as a freak in front of vast crowds in the music hall in Leicester. For years he and his disfigurement were the main attraction of the Gaiety Palace of Varieties, where he was valued as a living freak and not a 17-year-old boy who saw nothing but misery in his life. Somehow he found his way back to England and to the door of the only man who made him a promise to help, Dr. Treves. The doctor welcomed him. A series of examinations was arranged at the hospital in London, only to discover that Merrick’s state was much worse than thought.

Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), often erroneously called John Merrick, was an English man with severe deformities. He was first exhibited at a freak show as the "Elephant Man", and then went to live at the London Hospital after he met Frederick Treves, subsequently becoming well known in London society. Merrick was born in Leicester and began to develop abnormally during the first few years of his life. His mother died when he was 11 and his father soon remarried

Like elephants, the elephant man also has two tusks with which to gore enemies, which can be exceedingly useful should the player lodge their weapon in an agile enemy (most flying creatures). Some dwarves like elephant men for their strength, their amazing trunks, their calves' spirited antics, their tusks, their great weight, their social behavior, their flappy ears, their uprooting of trees, their aggressive sparring, their trumpeting, their tool use and their self-awareness.
