Sleigh Bells aren't afraid to break free of their shred-pop formula, obviously, because Reign of Terror is much more of an airy album that relies on melody and Alexis's vocal aptitude more than her straight up charisma. The first half of Bitter Rivals-I'm actually relistening to the title track/debut single right now-in my opinion, is a reaction to the general wishy-washinessness I heard about Reign of Terror. They go for it, head on, from the very first dog bark. The album is top-loaded and hard as hell (cheesiness and all), and I can't wait to watch it live and not think.
For their third album, Bitter Rivals, Sleigh Bells have made a few more tweaks to the formula. They've embraced more varied instrumentation-see: the lightning-strike synths on "Sing Like A Wire"; the menacingly strummed acoustic guitar that opens "Bitter Rivals"-and added a drummer to their live show. But most notably, they've become more creatively democratic. Miller handled the lyrics, music, and production on the previous records, but on Bitter Rivals Krauss wrote most of the melodies. The slower, less insistent songs on Bitter Rivals fare better. The R&B-inflected "Young Legends" showcases the album's strongest melody, but it's unfortunate that the song's hesitant and ill-fitting production (at least half of Krauss's vocals come through sputtered and muffled like walkie-talkie transmissions) holds it back from fully blooming.

Bitter Rivals’: Go Inside Sleigh Bells’ Lean, Mean New Album. The band will kick off its fall tour on Friday, October 4th, in Pittsburgh. Even though our music is bombastic and tough and abrasive, this record is super positive, says singer Alexis Krauss. I can’t tell you how excited I am to get onstage and blast these songs, like ‘Bitter Rivals’ or ‘Tiger Kit’ or ‘Young Legends,’ that just feel so conducive to that celebratory experience that our live shows are.
