Judy Collins' last straight, folk-based album of the 1960s, 5th Album marks her transition from a "maid of constant sorrow" to a bona fide artist. With its covers ranging from Lennon and McCartney to adaptations from The Threepenny Opera, 1966's In My Life would readily attest to this. But 5th Album, cut in late 1964, may very well be her definitive folk statement. A trio of Bob Dylan songs act as the album's centerpiece, clearly showing Collins' growth into more progressive songs
Judy Collins has had great success interpreting songs written by Joni Mitchell. This one was an inspired choice for Collins to record. Her rich vocal tones are well utilized here in this infectious track. This track is a folk song with a definite country vibe as well. It was written by Canadian folksinger Ian Tyson who first recorded it with his wife Sylvia in their duo Ian and Sylvia. This version by Collins features a prominent pedal steel guitar that underscores the western flavor. A song written by Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention, this was the title track of Judy Collins' 1968 album. A slow tempo folk classic, it retains the haunting quality of the best Brit folk traditional tunes. The vocal here is pure and beautiful. The song was covered a number of times, but Collin's version is probably the best known. The album reached number 29 on the pop charts.
The debut album release by Judy Collins, A Maid of Constant Sorrow was issued in November 1961 and features a collection of traditional folk songs. The album therefore serves as a pointer of future style; there are several that cover social and political protest, similar in style to Bob Dylan (he too would record Man Of Constant Sorrow).
