Mahavishnu Orchestra were a jazz fusion band formed in New York City in 1971 by English guitarist John McLaughlin. The band underwent several line-up changes throughout its history across two stints from 1971 to 1976 and 1984 to 1987.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra was a group with a huge gravitational pull, influencing virtually all "fusion" guitarists, and many rock outfits. You can pretty much draw a straight line from Mahavishnu to Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow" and "Wired", and to Robert Fripp's middle 70's and early 80's incarnations of his band, King Crimson. The group also featured a drummer, Billy Cobham, who became a model for many of his peers, including Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson. I do wish they had included "Lotus on an Irish Stream" from album one, because it's the best evidence that this group could be wonderfully lyrical. I wish they had done more music in that vein.
