On hindsight the playground anthems and production make sense when looking at the path Prince was taking, especially when the next album Parade and the following Sign O' The Times confirmed his majesty of pop/funk/rock, always with a foot firmly in love/sex/religion. Around the World in a Day. Prince & The Revolution.
Prince & the Revolution shift musical moods and textures from song to song - witness how the fluttering psychedelia of "Christopher Tracy's Parade" gives way to the spare, jazzy funk of "New Position," which morphs into the druggy "I Wonder U" - and they're determined not to play it safe, even on the hard funk of "Girls and Boys" and. "Mountains," as well as the stunning "Kiss," which hits hard with just a dry guitar, keyboard, drum machine, and layered vocals.
Paisley Park", "Condition Of The Heart", and "Pop Life" all contain a sound akin to an organ which reminds me of the instrument used in "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles. This is a wonderful grouping of songs by Prince, and I think he was heavily influenced by his new discovery - at the time - of music by the Beatles. You can hear that sort of 60s pop, Beatles feel in these songs. This Album is Quite Cool and His Band the Revolution is Still on Board. An 80's Gem, The Minn. Bad Boy Has some great grooves on this one.
Prince and the Revolution Purple Rain (1984, Warner Bros). So much has been written about Purple Rain at this point, but it remains one of the finest examples of that rare moment when a pop star somehow creates and captures a cultural zeitgeist that still holds power decades later. When we think of Prince, it’s often the purple-jacketed, g, guitar-shredding tortured genius depicted in the movie for which this album served as the soundtrack . The album also holds importance for its literal and symbolic introduction of Paisley Park into Prince’s empire, as a song, a label, and most iconically, as the name for his creative headquarters, not quite yet in construction but on the horizon. Aroun. s a transitional record.
