Too Much Too Soon is the second album by the American hard rock band New York Dolls. It was released on May 10, 1974, by Mercury Records. The album was recorded earlier that year at A&R Studios in New York City with veteran producer Shadow Morton. He had been enlisted by New York Dolls frontman David Johansen after the group felt dissatisfied with the recording of their 1973 self-titled debut album
After the clatter of their first album failed to bring them a wide audience, the New York Dolls hired producer Shadow Morton to work on the follow-up, Too Much Too Soon. The differences are apparent right from the start of the ferocious opener, "Babylon. Not only are the guitars cleaner, but the mix is dominated by waves of studio sound effects and female backing vocals.
But this issue from Culture Factory deserves a lot of praise, for the crispness of the sound, the unabashed high volume, and the overall care that went into the release - if not as elaborate a package as the import, it's also a lot less expensive and sounds just as good (and that's great, by the way)

I came across Too Much, Too Soon, their ed sophomore effort, and decided to download it. If this sucks, I’m done with these guys, I thought. 40 minutes later, however, I had been enlightened, and had finally understood what was wrong with my approach: I had been listening to the wrong album all along. In fact, in my perousal of the Dolls, I had always favoured their first album, based on the tried and true principle that bands are usually at their best on their debuts.
The New York Dolls’ first album expanded their cult from Manhattan to the rest of hard-core, hard-rock America. As a result, Too Much Too Soon is less specifically rooted in Manhattan, though its bluster and swagger are no less urban. Rather than the specifically New York City Subway Train of their first LP, there’s Babylon, the town on Long Island, the Philadelphia soul of There’s Gonna Be a Showdown, and the Chinese accents of Bad Detective. Too Much Too Soon is plainly about moving a lot and not going anywhere.
