North Star Deserter is a 2007 album by Vic Chesnutt. The backing musicians on the album are Guy Picciotto (guitarist and vocalist for the groups Rites of Spring and Fugazi) and Canadian Post-rock band, A Silver Mt. Zion. It was released on Constellation Records on August 27, 2007 (Europe), September 11, 2007 (rest of world).

Album · 2007 · 12 Songs. Zion Memorial Orchestra, Fugazi's Guy Picciotto, Bruce Cawdron of Godspeed! You Black Emperor, and others, Vic Chesnutt devises some of his career’s most inspired music. Not since his earliest days has he sounded so perfectly engaged. Warm" starts as a gentle acoustic prelude for the modest-yet-grand power of "Glossolalia," which climaxes with a wordless wail. The musicians backing Chesnutt are flexible and ego-free, giving his lyrics appropriate settings without insisting on gratuitous solo spots and often leaving the music spare. In his liner notes to Vic Chesnutt's North Star Deserter, Jem Cohen wrote, "I make films, I'm no record producer. But I needed to bring these particular people together in this particular place.

Summary: The latest album includes guest appearances by Constellation artists A Silver Mt. Zion, members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Fugazi's Guy Picciotto.

On North Star Deserter, Chesnutt is joined by high-profile guests such as Guy Piciotto of Fugazi, the entirety of A Silver Mt. Zion and Bruce Cawdron of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. At the risk of making the most obvious possible statement, when you put Canada's premier post-rock ensembles in a room with arguably one of the greatest songwriters of recent times and throw in a core member of one of the world's most celebrated punk bands and a number of members from varying other groups associated with the Constellation record label, the result is going to be interesting

Vic Chesnutt was great with just himself and a guitar. But he could also kick into high gear with a great band behind him. And the ensemble created here by Guy Picciotto was probably the best backing of Vic's career. The group continued with At the Cut which is also worth your investment. Also, there are some amazing live performances of this group together that are some of the last performances of Vic's life. Listening to these Constellation releases always make me sad knowing Vic had so little time left in this life. But they are also some of the best recordings of his career. And with the Constellation label, the pressings are top notch. Highly recommended.
