Clarence Williams - The Complete 1923-1926 Clarence Williams Sessions, Volume 4 -- 1926 download mp3 album
26. –Clarence Williams. Gravier Street Blues.
Clarence Williams and the Blues Singers, Vol. 1 (1923-1928). This imported CD has all of Clarence Williams's recordings from a 3 1/2 month period; not only The Blue Five performances but Williams's work with blues singers Sara Martin, Mamie Smith, Rosetta Crawford and Margaret Johnson in addition to his wife Eva Taylor. Most valuable are the eight instrumentals for they feature the great soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet on his earliest recordings along with trumpeter Thomas Morris.

Gilles Pétard, the original owner, intended to release the complete master takes of all jazz and swing recordings that were issued on 78 rpm. By the time the label suspended operations in July 2008, its scope had extended to LPs. Pétard also started the label R&B Classics to reissue postwar rhythm & blues recordings. An unaffiliated label, Neatworks, released alternate takes and misidentified master takes of jazz artists previously issued on Chronological Classics. 697 Fletcher Henderson 1923. 717 Duke Ellington 1938 Vol 2. 718 Clarence Williams 1926-27. 719 Benny Goodman 1931-33. 720 Fats Waller 1929-34. 891 Clarence Williams 1934. 892 Helen Humes 1927-45. 893 Nat King Cole 1945.
Each stage of the cycle seemed to compound success. In Bessie's case, she also appeared in revue. The final tracks here, Money Blues, Baby Doll and Hard Driving Papa, were recorded in May 1926. Bessie seems to be drawing from the personal to give her interpretations a bitter flavour. Halfway through 1926, Bessie took a rest. I am so glad I added this album to my collection of the ladies of jazz from the 1930's and 1940's. This set and Volume 2 of this series are a very cost effective way of getting Bessie Smith's complete recordings. The re-mastered sound is very good for recordings from this time period; the liner notes are decent and the price is reasonable. Overall, a very worthwhile 4CD set of Bessie Smith recordings.
