Astral Signal (1974). Gene Harris - Astral Signal.

Nexus is an album by American jazz pianist Gene Harris recorded in 1975 and released on the Blue Note label. Sauda" (Ronaldo N. Jackson, Charlotte Politte, John Rowin) - 2:05. Funky Business" (Jackson, Politte, Rowin, Jerry Peters) - 4:05. Koko and Leeroe" (Peters) - 6:05. Love Don't Love Nobody" (Joseph Jefferson, Charles Simmons) - 7:28. Rushin' Roulette" (C. Davis, Sigidi Abdullah, Brenda Sutton) - 3:52. The Jitterbug Waltz" (Fats Waller) - 5:34.

I had never heard of Gene Harris, or known of his Three Sounds association previous to this (though I heard it was quite extensive and good), but in the future kept an ear open for subsequent recordings. Even though I liked his straight ahead recordings, none of the rest matched this fusion gem. I just wish Blue Note would re-release this on CD, for my vinyl is worn.

Very interesting record by Gene Harris and actually my favorite of his from his later period, kind of spacey relative to his other records on Blue Note, similar to Eddie Henderson Sunburst or Herbie Hancock Headhunters/Sextant/Thrust. His subsequent records on Blue Note tend to be more straight ahead jazz-funk in the style of, say, Donald Byrd's Places and Spaces. Though not entirely representative, really, if you buy one Gene Harris record from the mid to late 1970s, this is the one to get. Definitely worth it.
