Throughout the album, KRS-One gives honor and praise to Scott La Rock for producing the album and he mostly goes on about the importance of originality and being "real" instead of a "Sucker MC". In 2003, the album was ranked number 444 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The cover, which showcases Parker and Sterling surrounded by an arsenal of weapons, was hip-hop's first major release to feature members brandishing firearms. By this time, Sterling had befriended a neighborhood teenager named Derrick "D-Nice" Jones, who did a human beatboxing routine for the group.

Boogie Down Productions was a hip hop group, originally composed of KRS-One, D-Nice, and DJ Scott La Rock. DJ Scott La Rock was murdered on August 27, 1987, five months after the release of BDP's debut album, Criminal Minded. The name of the group, Boogie Down, derives from a nickname for the South Bronx section of The Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City

On this date in 1987, Blastmaster KRS-One, DJ Scott La Rock, The Human 808 D-Nice and the rest of the Boogie Down Productions crew released their highly anticipated debut album Criminal Minded on B-Boy Records. With the South Bronx vs. The Bridge aka BDP vs. The Juice Crew beef on wax was at its height, the Criminal Minded album proved to be one of the most important instructional projects for up and coming emcees on how to take out the top dog and start your own reign

South Bronx Boogie Down Productions. s first hit single, South Bronx, in which the refrain, The South Bronx, The South, South Bronx, is repeated throughout, was in part an effort to instill pride in those who lived there, said Mr. Sterling’s partner in the group, Kris Parker. On the night Mr. Sterling was shot, he had gone to the Highbridge Garden Homes at the request of a 16-year-old former member of his musical group who said he was being harassed by older youths in a dispute over his girlfriend. According to witnesses, by the time Mr. Sterling and his friends arrived, those harassing the youth were not in sight and.
