via needs more to be said about Macronympha? I’ve had a soft spot for their unique uncompromising noise for some years now, buying whatever MSNP releases I can get my mitts on, and it always delivering the goods.Super Oxide is “the first CD collection of early Macronympha featuring seven tracks from 1990-1993” recorded by Joseph Roemer and Rodger Stella. So we’re really talking about early period Macro, the recordings for this CD were compiled by Rodger Stella from original master tapes and was assisted by Dan Johansson (Sewer Election) I assume in the editing and mastering department. The disc starts with the bombastic ‘Almost Human’, a rhythmic scrap metal opus and personal stand out track of this release. Bizarre tortured vocals ring through the opening moments with a constant throbbing machine-like sound in the background. I don’t say this lightly but you really do need to listen to this at a very loud volume to get the most out of it. Listening closely to the recording you can hear the seamless cut/paste method of the master Stella, this giving the track a real unpredictability and building tension nicely. You are bombarded by wave after wave of harsh distorted metal and what sounds like at times short wave radio. ‘Almost Human’ is an absolute beast! As the CD progresses you get to hear a wide selection of the many sides of early Macro, at times you can hear the crude cassette sound that adds to the overall charm of this release, wave after wave of Radio/Theremin sounding noise crashing down it’s pretty relentless!‘Dead Frequency’ picks up from where the first track starts with another barrage of looped overdriven metal sounds like a decaying industrial building grinding away yet falling apart at the same time. Again the seamless editing keeps the interest and pummels your brain into submission.By the time you reach ‘Tempus Interludium’ the sound has changed, still harsh but this track has more space and feels less claustrophobic and a lot more eerie. The looped metal sounds have room to echo about as it builds slowly up to growling finish. This record finishes with the smothering ‘Necromania’ that can be heard in this YouTube promotional video. To me it sounds like a murky building site taken into the recording studio. The sound of destructions sure sounds like fun in this recording, I’m sure I can hear the odd howl of either Roemer of Stella in the background of this track before it builds up to heavy pulses of harsh noise before ending abruptly – More please!Any self-respecting Macronympha fan should own a copy of this. I would say it’s up there with some of their classic records such as ‘Pittsburgh / Pennsylvania’, ‘Crack’, and ‘Amplified Humans’. Limited to 300 copies on the excellent new Ljud & Bild Producktion record label run by Dan Johansson. Sold out at source but can easily be picked up from all the regular noise outlets; I’ve also seen new copies available on Discogs for cheap. Don’t wait on this one as they’ll soon be all gone. I hope to hear more classic Macro reissues released on this scale in the future.
