The Sky Is Crying" is a blues standard written and initially recorded by Elmore James in 1959. Called "one of his most durable compositions", "The Sky Is Crying" became a R&B record chart hit and has been interpreted and recorded by numerous artists. The Sky Is Crying" is a slow-tempo twelve-bar blues notated in 12/8 time in the key of C. An impromptu song inspired by a Chicago downpour during the recording session, it features James' slide guitar work and vocals.

With the confusing plethora of Elmore James discs out on the market, this is truly the place to start, featuring the best of his work culled from several labels. Highlights include James' original recording of "Dust My Broom," "It Hurts Me Too," ". Mama" (with Elmore backing Big Joe Turner), and the title track, one of the best slow blues ever created. Slide guitar doesn't get much better than this, making this particular compilation not only a perfect introduction to Elmore's music, but an essential piece for any blues collection.

Elmore James’s 1960 The Sky Is Crying has become a staple in the blues' culture and is considered a blues standard. The song was written during a downpour while in a recording session. The result was a down-tempo, twelve bar R&B track that peaked at No. 15 on the R&B Sides chart in 1960. Coincidentally, it was his last charting song before he died, three years later. The song has been covered countless times and the original was a hit on the R&B charts and is considered one of James' most durable compositions. The Sky Is Crying" Track Info

Other post-WWII Chicago bluesmen are better known, but the work of Elmore James holds up as well as any of theirs. I've got & heard Fleetwood Mac's stellar version of some of EJ's songs FIRST, like 'Shake Your Moneymaker' on their 1st album, before I had heard the originals by EJ. Then I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn's version of 'The Sky Is Crying'
