American Fool is the fifth studio album by John Mellencamp, released under the stage name John Cougar in 1982. The album was his commercial breakthrough, holding the position on the Billboard album chart for nine weeks. It was the best selling album of 1982. According to a 1983 article in the Toledo Blade, the song "Danger List" originated when Mellencamp heard his guitarist Larry Crane playing some chords in a basement rehearsal room.

Produced in part by legendary Memphis guitarist Steve Cropper, the album falls somewhere between the heroic romanticism of Bruce Springsteen and the genial spirit of Huey Lewis. Mellencamp sounds rough-edged but tender on ballads like Ain’t Even Done With the Night and Make Me Feel and stirs up a bit of rock sweat on Cheap Shot and Hot Night In a Cold Town.
