In particular, after the death of Modest Mussorgsky in 1881, Rimsky-Korsakov took on the task of revising several of Mussorgsky's pieces for publication and performance. For example, Rimsky-Korsakov's arrangement of Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain is the version generally performed today. However, critical opinion of Mussorgsky has changed over time so that his style, once considered unpolished, is now valued for its originality.
His father, Andrei Petrovich Rimsky-Korsakov, was a government official of liberal views, and his mother, Sofya Vasilievna, was well educated and could play the piano. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five. He was a master of orchestration. His best-known orchestral io Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade-are considered staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas. Rimsky-Korsakov believed, as did fellow composer Mily Balakirev and critic Vladimir Stasov, in developing a nationalistic style of music, including Russian folk song and lore along with exotic elements in a practice known as musical orientalism, and eschewed traditional Western compositional methods. However, Rimsky-Korsakov appreciated Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871.
Korsakov, like a real genius, is changing all the time, trying everything and developing permanently, especially in Opera. His romantic and warm "Mai night", historical and dramatic Tzar's bride, Absolutely modern "the maiden of Pskov", truly colorful and "Russian" "snegurochka" and "Kitezh" and his sarcastic and very different last opera - "The golden cockerel".
