Lawrence Welk (March 11, 1903 – May 17, 1992) was an American musician, accordionist, bandleader, and television impresario, who hosted the television program The Lawrence Welk Show from 1951 to 1982. His style came to be known to his large audience of radio, television, and live-performance fans (and critics) as "champagne music". Welk was born in the German-speaking community of Strasburg, North Dakota.

from the album Runaway with Del Shannon. Appearing on Late Night With David Letterman on February 10, 1987, Shannon reprised his hit backed by Paul Shaffer and the World's Most Dangerous Band. Letterman introduced Shannon as having sold as many as 80,000 singles of "Runaway" per day at its height. Del Shannon re-recorded the song in 1986, as the theme for the NBC television series Crime Story starring Dennis Farina, which was set in the early 1960s. The lyrics, however, were rewritten for this version to better reflect the show's subject matter.

Lawrence Welk and His Orchestra - Runaway. True stereo mix taken from Ranwood/Columbia Record Club album "The Very Best of Lawrence Welk". This stereo mix runs nearly 30 seconds longer than the single (which displays the incorrect timing on the pictured label). Lawrence Welk quotes. Many times I wondered if I were truly carrying out God's plan for my life.
