A brother-sister blues-punk duo, Joe Gideon & the Shark differ from The White Stripes in at least three crucial ways. One is that singer-guitarist Joe – a veteran of Bikini Atoll – is often outshone by his sister Viva (aka The Shark), particularly in a live setting. A second is that nobody's yet produced a marriage certificate. A third is that these two are no Luddites. As the album draws to a close, Gideon switches to home-spun philosophy, and the title of the penultimate track brings a cryptic but comforting declaration: 'Anything You Love That Much, You Will See Again'. Irritatingly, however, the album ends not there but with the pointlessly tacked-on 'Pale Blue Dot', in which nothing at all happens.

Joe Gideon’s album Versa Vice – his first outing since the break-up of Joe Gideon & The Shark – is a suitably idiosyncratic wig-out that MOJO described as an intensely spirited, raw, dark rock debut. The album also features Ed Harcourt on piano, Duke Garwood on horns and last but not least Jim Sclavunos (Grinderman/Bad Seeds) on drums.

After the London-based post-rock band BIKINI ATOLL was disbanded in 2006, Joe Gideon Seifert and his younger sister Viva Seifert formed a duo JOE GIDEON & THE SHARK. Gideon played bass, guitar and sang; Viva played drums, keyboards, percussion, programmed and did some back-vocals. Released in 2009 by Bronzerat Records, Harum Scarum was their first full-length album, which followed two singles.

Released in 2009 by Bronzerat Records, “Harum Scarum” was their first full-length album, which followed two singles. Every track on the album tells a story in non-rhyming verse and in an argot drawn from the ’30-50 Beatnik surreal novels, while musically the songs are close to Swamp-Rock, Alternative Blues-n-Americana. The lyrics in an album gain as much importance as the music itself. This is an astonishing combination, somewhat in-between Nick Cave, Wovenhand and The Black Keys. The album turns ethereal and fleshly, innocent and cynical, sometimes dark humorous. It showcased an inspired new band with definitely original vision of Life and Humanity. Recommended.
