Booker T. & The MG's - The Very Best Of Booker T. & The MG's download mp3 album
It's impossible to imagine Southern soul existing at all without the powerful input of Booker T. & the MG's, one of the grittiest and most precise rhythm sections in the history of pop music. The MGs were the house band for Stax Records and its imprints Volt and Chalice, and played on virtually everything the label released, backing Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett and any other Stax artist one can think of, and managed as well to release 23 singles and 11 albums under their own name between 1962 and 1971. Booker T. s continued to issue instrumental singles and albums throughout the 1960s. The group was a successful recording combo in its own right, but most of the work by the musicians in the band during this period was as the core of the de facto house band at Stax Records. Members of Booker T. s (often, but not always, performing as a unit) performed as the studio backing band for Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Delaney & Bonnie and many others in the 1960s. The 1973 album entitled The MG's, with Manuel and Whitsett replacing Cropper and Jones, was not commercially successful, though it was critically well received.

But Booker T and the MG's are unique in their subtle, laidback, restrained musicianship; steady and clean. Listening to 'Green Onions' and comparing it to Roy Buchanan's version, I remember Booker T and the MG's put this version out several years before. Booker T & the MG's might well be my favourite R&B band of the '60s. This 20 track collection is a perfect encapsulation of their career; instrumental tracks which couldn't be any tighter, catchier or funkier if they tried. Green Onions and Time Is Tight are established classics, but they really only scratch the surface of this multi-racial band's achievements.
