Tired eyes Shocked into a daze The monolith rose from the ground And the sky was red Like the soil in my grave The earth shook with the tides And caused storms through endless seas Tell the gods to gather their clouds To amend this broken dream. Dead to the world Cast a silent revolt The slaughtered black sheep No hope comes as I dream of light I clench my fists as I sleep I've lived a thousand lives Seen horrors through a thousand lies Dig deeper Through clawed hands you'll find No end in sight.
Last week, we gushed about how much we love Monolith, the new album from British thrash outfit Sylosis; we praised the album for harkening back to classic thrash influences while maintaining a modern sound, for its expert songwriting, and for its tight musicianshi. asically, everything you want from a metal album, right? . Stream Monolith in full after the jump. The band kicks off a tour with Lamb of God, In Flames, Hatebreed, and Hellyeah starting October 30; get dates here.
Sylosis were my gateway to the world of extreme metal. When I first started listening to metal, I abhorred all things that had blast beats and rough vocals in them as I considered people who liked and made this type of music to be knuckle draggers who cared for nothing but brutality, regardless of actual musical merit. Now to be sure, Sylosis are not out there to reinvent the wheel. If you single out the individual parts that form the body of their musical vision, no one will fault you for saying that they're as generic as you could get. However, taken as a whole, the way these various parts come together might be slightly novel, even if not particularly groundbreaking.
It needed to be something to accentuate the dark, gloomy vibe of the album without going for anything too cliché or stereotypically metal. We listen to a lot of '70s progressive music and with the Art Nouveau style was quite popular at that time. At this point, we don't want to reveal too much about the concept but one of the figures on the cover loosely represents the devil in disguise or a satyr.
