Where My Aim Is True implied punk rock with its lyrics and stripped-down production, This Year's Model sounds like punk. Not that Elvis Costello's songwriting has changed - This Year's Model is comprised largely of leftovers from My Aim Is True and songs written on the road. It's the music that changed. After releasing My Aim Is True, Costello assembled a backing band called the Attractions, which were considerably tougher and wilder than Clover, who played on his debut
His second album, This Year's Model, was released in 1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the best albums from 1967–1987. His third album, Armed Forces, was released in 1979, and features his highest-charting single "Oliver's Army" (number 2 in the UK). His first three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. That year, Costello also produced Rum Sodomy & the Lash for the Irish punk/folk band the Pogues. 1985 also saw Costello appear in the Alan Bleasdale film No Surrender, playing a small role as a very bad stage magician hired to perform at a seedy Liverpool night club on a bleak New Year's Eve. Growing antipathy between Costello and Bruce Thomas contributed to the Attractions' first split in 1986 when Costello was preparing to make a comeback.

This Year’s Model, his second album in less than a year, is Costello’s attempt to make certain those wounds stay open. Elvis Costello feeds off terror; sometimes it almost seems as if he deliberately conjures it up so he can finger its jagged grain and twist its neck. On last year’s My Aim Is True, the fear centered on failure ( Mystery Dance ) and rejection ( I’m Not Angry ). On This Year’s Model, it zeros in on success: Costello is afraid that fad and fashion will seduce and trample him. (I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea is the title and refrain of his recent Top Twenty single in England, and he means those words to be taken literally. Chelsea represents Costello’s nightmare world of success, where deceit is masked by propriety and last year’s model is thrown out with yesterday’s wash. Costello, of course, was last year’s model.
This Year's Model is fully realized in style and substance, both unique and unassuming. You can tell an Elvis Costello song from melody alone, but the arrangements and performances offered up by the attractions are no less distinctive and recognizable. There is not a single bad song on This Year's Model, and the one moment on the record that kind of goes clunk (the opening line of "Lip Service") still gets stuck in my head all the time. seek out the cheaper, better (and sadly out-of-print) Rhino reissue
