Joe Farrell Quartet is a jazz album by Joe Farrell that was released by CTI Records. It was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio on July 1 and 2, 1970. Guitarist John McLaughlin plays on two tracks, and there are two duo tracks, one with Dave Holland and one with Chick Corea. The album was re-released twice in the mid 1970s (with different cover art in each instance) as Super Session and Song of the Wind. Follow Your Heart" (McLaughlin) – 6:50. Collage for Polly" (Farrell) – 2:28.

Joseph Carl Firrantello (December 16, 1937 – January 10, 1986), known as Joe Farrell, was an American jazz saxophonist and flautist. He is best known for a series of albums under his own name on the CTI record label and for playing in the initial incarnation of Chick Corea's Return to Forever. Farrell was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, United States. He joined the Ralph Marterie band in 1957 and later played with Maynard Ferguson and The Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra.

Joe Farrell, known in the '60s as a solid hard bop tenor saxophonist, branched out in the '70s. On this near-classic album, Farrell switches between tenor, soprano, flute, and even oboe while being joined by a rather notable backup crew: keyboardist Chick Corea, guitarist John McLaughlin, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. In addition to a famous version of McLaughlin's "Follow Your Heart," the material includes originals by Farrell and Corea, and the leader makes a strong impression on each of his horns.

Joe Farrell was a tenor sax great, who died at age 48. This album is great throughout, strong group with Chick Corea, Jack Dejohnette and Dave Holland. John McLaughlin seems to be the quartet’s guest not playing on all tracks. Farrell was heavily influenced by Coltrane and it shows on this album with absolutely haunting tenor solos. I think you will love this album. Personnel: Joe Farrell - Soprano & Tenor Saxophones, Flute, Oboe Chick Corea - Piano Dave Holland - Bass Jack DeJohnette - Drums. John McLaughlin – Guitar. Side one.
