For genius Pete Townshend, this 1985 effort is just one album in a long line of brilliant music. More power to him, and may the songs keep coming. The music - or "novel" as it's subtitled - defies genre. Liner notes state that White City is a film written by Pete Townshend. Townshend always refused to be confined by traditional rock music format, as demonstrated by his fondness for "rock operas," and quirky Who songs. It's best listened to in its entirety. With each listen you'll hear something new. (I can say this even after having worn out a cassette of same.
Pete Townshend attempted another concept album with 'White City: A Novel,' which also arrived with a film made from the same themes. Those ideas were brought to visual life with White City: The Music Movie, an hour-long film directed by Richard Lowenstein - then in the midst of a long series of videos for INXS - in which Townshend, who's essentially playing himself, meets up with a pair of old friends whose marriage is in trouble. Their relationship is initially portrayed as the victim of declining standards of living in White City, but the truth - as it so often is in Townshend's best songs - is more complex
After the experimental All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, Pete Townshend returned to a more traditional form of concept album with White City: A Novel. Built around a loose narrative concerning urban despair, the album doesn't work very well conceptually, yet a handful of the individual songs are among his finest solo work, including the punchy "Face the Face" and the anthemic "Give Blood.

A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who, also known as Daltrey Sings Townshend, is a music event and a later live album by Roger Daltrey (of English rock band The Who) documenting a two-night concert at Carnegie Hall in February 1994. The music event broke Carnegie Hall's two-day box office gross record, and was the fastest sell-out in the historic venue's history.
