Night Beat is the twelfth studio album by American singer Sam Cooke, released in August 1963 by RCA Victor. The album title originated from late-night recording sessions by Cooke and a quartet of studio musicians in February 1963. It has been featured in "best-of" lists by contemporary music critics and regarded as one of Cooke's best.
The songs are intimate blues, most taken at the pace of a late-night stroll, but despite the dark shading and heart-rending tempos, Cooke's voice is so transcendent it's difficult to become depressed while listening. Cooke also wrote three of the songs, including the excellent "Mean Old World," and rendered the traditional "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" practically unfamiliar with his own re-arrangement.
Sam Cooke challenged R&B’s focus on singles with this carefully crafted exploration of bluesy, midnight moods. Juke-joint grit turns elegant on Laughin’ and Clownin’ and You Gotta Move, while Cooke recasts the blues standard Fool’s Paradise as a ribbon of silken vocal maneuvers. There are no wasted notes. With each exquisite and plaintive measure, Cooke invests simple works like Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen with newfound richness, and lures listeners into the magnetic sparseness of Lost and Lookin’. Before he died too young, he recorded this "throw-away" album in an era of 45s and it is a masterpiece. There does not seem to be an uninteresting or low-rent SAM COOKE recording. I wanna hear any low rent, but I find everything is great!! This might be his GREATEST.
Sam Cooke’s night beat is a classic soul album from the King of Soul. Released about a year before his death. Sam’s voice and tight group of musicians allows for very intimate record about grief when losing a lover. The album opens with a wonderfully upbeat tune that quickly turns to a piece about troubled times and his relationship with God, a message that isn’t revisited on much of the rest of the album. Through the next couple of songs the listener will see the grieving process in effect. The songs are about losing his woman, hating the world, coping with loss and finally getting over what.
The results are wonderful - except for his early Soul Stirrers sides, Night Beat is the best place to marvel at one of the two or three best voices of the century. The songs are intimate blues, most taken at the pace of a late-night stroll, but despite the dark shading and heart-rending tempos, Cooke's voice is so transcendent it's difficult to become depressed while listening
