Throughout, the songs on Obsidian are physical in a literal sense, mimicking the human motion of the characters described therein. The collation of disparate layers on Worsening is simply astonishing, so many parts going in gawky, arrhythmic directions to form a fearsome, fluid whole.

In the blackness of the night My eyes darken, But I see the light. A pale reflection of a man Staring back at me; The personification of apathy; All grains of hope lost amongst the sand. Manikins walking around, All talking, but without a coherent sound, The deafening silence only comes to pass, In the fiery deluge of my past. Plastic faces, lifeless eyes; Contorted in my direction I surmise; Mechanical grimace, Affect sound; Plastic manikins all around

Obsidian is Will Wiesenfeld’s 3rd full length album under the solo project Baths. Obsidian provides a stark contrast to the often upbeat themes and bright rhythmic elements of Baths' debut LP Cerulean. Wiesenfeld has stated that although he was already working on an album with darker themes, much of the inspiration for the mood of the album came from his experience with a severe case of E. coli, which left him mostly bedridden and in pain for weeks. I got really, really sick with E Coli for upwards of like three months and I was bedridden.
