John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (March 6, 1923 – June 15, 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. Towards the end of his Bop period, and for his ninth studio album, legendary jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery reunited with another musician, originally from Indianapolis, the master of the Hammond B-3, Melvin Rhyne. John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (March 6, 1923 – June 15, 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. Montgomery was known for an unusual technique of plucking the strings with the side of his thumb which granted him a distinctive sound. He often worked with his brothers Buddy and Monk and with organist Jimmy Smith.

With his use of octaves and forceful soloing in the late '50s, Wes Montgomery asserted that the guitarist was fully capable of fronting his own group and, like the tenors, offer cutting edge music. It isn't so much the material he chooses that captures one's attention, though certainly an original like "Four on Six" draws the listener in.
