The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (album). The Crazy World of Arthur Brown is the eponymous debut studio album by the English psychedelic rock band the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, released in June 1968. The album was produced by the Who's manager Kit Lambert with associate production by Pete Townshend. The album was released in June 1968 on Lambert's Track Records label in the UK, with North American distribution handled by Atlantic Records.

Fire" is a 1968 song written by Arthur Brown, Vincent Crane, Mike Finesilver and Peter Ker. Performed by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, it was released as a single and on the band's debut album, also called The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. The single reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom in August 1968 and in Canada. In October, it reached No. 2 in the United States Billboard charts and No. 19 in Australia.

By 1968, the debut album, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Produced by the Who's manager Kit Lambert, and executive-produced by Pete Townshend on Track Records, the label begun by Lambert and Chris Stamp, it spun off an equally surprising hit single, "Fire", and contained a version of "I Put a Spell on You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, a similarly bizarre showman. The three Kingdom Come albums each have a distinctive character. The first was a highly complex concept album apparently on the theme of humanity living in a zoo and being controlled by cosmic, religious and commercial forces. The second was loosely on the theme of water, which Brown had declared four years earlier would be the subject of the second album by the Crazy World. It was musically more conventional than the first, much less heavy, though stranger in places.

Anyone know if this if worth the cash, don't know if it's a good one or just another fancy paint job?
  • FireWater
Id like to know too. Especially who mastered the LP and if its from Tape sources.
  • Gamba
A small note about the WLP. In the photos I posted, the previous owner of the album scratched the promo info off the labels. These photos will do until better ones are posted.

Anyone with a copy of this edition who can tell me if the ”Rock Report” logo is printed on the cover or if it is a sticker? I have an identical edition but without the print/sticker and would like to know if it warrants a new entry.
  • Taun
In my opinion the album sounds well, isn't to what to attach ;)
  • Oppebro
Fire is a juggernaut Masterpiece. Totally different song from The Doors song of the same name. Wild Stuff! I never got a chance to see him but I heard that here in Detroit at the Grande he would perform "Fire" with a burning mask/headress on, actually flaming! A really wild performer. "I Put a Spell on You" is another wild rendition of his.
  • Pameala
He's still alive & kicking and performing and as Great as ever , you may still get to see him yet !

I first heard this album 43 years ago, at the age of 14, while on a drama course, and it has remained one of the best albums I have ever heard. A couple of weeks later it appeared for 50p in a local 2nd hand shop and I have owned it ever since. It is brilliant, Arthur Brown has a magnificent voice (still not bad I saw him live a few months ago). His version of "I put a Spell on You" on this album is the best I have ever heard. Not forgetting "Fire" of course. Every home should have one!

Surprisingly much of Brown’s material is melodic with soulful bluesy overtones, though in June of 1968 The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown was the mini freakout and hell bent darker side of psychedelia, with “Fire,” a song that seemed much longer during those hot summer nights than the two minute and fifty-five second running time, a song that easily gave Screamin’ Jay Hawkins a sincere run for his money, and was holding the attention of so many late night progressive radio listeners. As a 17 year old with my transistor radio on the sill of my open window, and “Fire” filtering in at the end of a Pink Floyd set, I did sit up and take notice, and was in attendance at the old Electric Factory when he and his crew showed up in full theatrical demonic face painted regalia, including a metal fire helmet blazing in flames, which tapped into our primal fear of fire, to blow our little minds. While “Fire” did reach number two on the American charts during the tail end of the Summer of Love [which was really the summer of 1967 into the spring of ’68], and hearing the song laced with those operatic vocals with today's ears, it sounds equally stupid creepy and childishly over the top with it’s sweeping organ heavy personification, jazz noodling, and baselines that harken back to the door Vanilla Fudge opened … but then there is so much really creepy music out there today that what was delivered here was merely a stepping stone of shameless enthusiasm.Originally Brown had envisioned the album as a concept built around the song “Fire,” though the notion didn’t sit well with producer and record executive Kit Lambert, so the album was themed on one side only. As to the rest of the album, the song “Come & Buy” blossoms like a shock rock version of The Doors, drawing the listener into a gothic horror film set to the graphic implications of the eternal burning flame. “Time - Confusion” is tight, and laced with a brilliant vocal performance that’s all tied neatly together with Crane’s string arrangements. Of course that leaves use with the the Hawkins’ cover of “I Put A Spell On You,” “Rest Cure,” “Child Of My Kingdom,” the James Brown cover of “I’ve Got Money,” and “Spontaneous Apple Creation” as bit of fusion-ed weirdness, that while certainly ahead of its time, leaves me to wonder if the world was a better place or not for having had Arthur Brown walking in flames among us.*** The fun facts: Their international tour fell apart almost from the get-go, with drummer Drachen Theaker quitting because he was afraid to fly and was replaced by Carl Palmer [yes Carl Palmer of Emerson Lake and Palmer], then organist Vincent Crane suffered a breakdown on stage due to the deep nature of his bi-polar issues, who briefly returned, only to quit again, this time taking Carl Palmer with him and formed Atomic Rooster. Drachen Theaker managed to overcome his fear of flying and returned, though Brown’s crazy world was now on a downward spiral, and flying wasn’t really an issue any longer. And then there was the small detail of Brown’s record label not at all liking his new material and shelving the album until it was finally released sometime in 1988 … but as they say, burn a candle at both ends, and it burns twice as brightly for half the time. Both John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, and Ronnie Wood of the Small Faces and The Rolling Stones tried out for Brown, with Wood’s guitar being heard on the John Peel Radio One Sessions.Brown had been working his flamed identity in France for awhile, though quickly had to return to the comfort and safety of the UK, as he burned down a club in Paris that belonged to the Mafia. It’s suggested that Brown was the first artist to preform naked, he was deported in Italy for wearing nothing but his fire helmet.Review by Jenell Kesler

While Hendrix was burning his guitar, Arthur Brown was busy setting fire to his head and wearing pre-KISS face-paint. Emerging from London scenes - like the UFO - with "The Devil's Grip" single, this 'God Of Hellfire' and his "Crazy World Of Arthur Brown" act lit up the late 60's. The band did much to help shape the progressive musical vision of the Seventies. Flowing robes, falsetto lyrics, the swelling organ. (Yes, he did get arrested for exposure on stage in Palermo, but that was later). On this album are genetic seeds that would form the family tree of Kingdom Come, Atomic Rooster & ELP. The single from this album, "Fire", went to No1 in the UK in August 1968.Keyboardist Vincent Crane, fundamental in the arrangements on this work, sets the Goth-horror scene on "Prelude-Nightmare". Brown follows with a 'Doors-like' "Fanfare-Fire Poem" and into the swooping and manic "Fire". From then on in the band have the Devil by the tail, with Drachen Theaker's drumming providing a fine backbone to the skeletons that emerge from Brown's etherial revelations. There are two covers, "I Put A Spell On You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) and "I've Got Money" (James Brown). The other eight are written by Brown and/or Crane. Produced by Pete Townshend, there's both a mono and stereo of this. If you're looking for an experience of UK musical directions in the late 60s this is well worth a listen.
