Our exclusive Commodores Collected release contains all these classics, supplemented with fan favourites and other tracks from their impressive oeuvre. Commodores' long association with Motown began as a result of a tour opening for the Jackson 5 in 1971. With their brass musicians and co-lead singer Lionel Richie they reached to fame by releasing their first R&B number one hit "Slippery When Wet". It meant the start of an impressive career, with seven number one songs and a host of other top 10 hits on the Billboard charts
Commodores is an American funk/soul band, which was at its peak in the late 1970s through the mid 1980s. The members of the group met as mostly freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for the Jackson 5 while on tour. The group's most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer.

With countless compilations of the group surfacing over the years, 1995's The Very Best of the Commodores is a fine choice for a single-disc set, doing a fine job of collecting all the hits and a few best-known album tracks. Weighing in at a hefty 20 tracks, all facets of the band are covered - a funk band that could give the big guns a run for their money ("Machine Gun," "Brick House," "The Zoo "), more laid-back fare ("Zoom," "Nightshift"), and perhaps what the band would become most.
