Deep Purple got an inspiration for this song from a fire at Frank Zappa 's concert in the Casino at Montreux, Switzerland on December 4, 1971. The band was going to record their "Machine Head" album there right after this concert. Deep Purple were in the audience for the concert, and lead singer Ian Gillan recalls two flares being blasted by someone sitting behind him. These flares landed in the top corner of the building and the fire quickly spread. They needed one more song, so they put together "Smoke On The Water" using Gillan's lyrics and riff the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore came up with. The result was a song telling the story of these strange events just days after they happened - the recording sessions took place from December 6-21.

Smoke on the Water tells the true story of a fire ignating during a 1971 Frank Zappa concert in Montreux, Switzerland, where the band had come to record their next album, Machine Head. The song made it to number four, their first top ten since Hush in 1968. It was also their first single to receive certification, being granted a gold record by the RIAA. Smoke on the Water" Track Info. Written By Ian Paice, Jon Lord, Roger Glover & 2 more. Release Date March 25, 1972.

From the Album: Machine Head. We all came out to Montreux On the Lake Geneva shoreline To make records with a mobile We didn’t have much time Frank Zappa and the Mothers Were at the best place around But some stupid with a flare gun Burned the place to the ground. Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky Smoke on the water. They burned down the gambling house It died with an awful sound Funky Claude was running in and out Pulling kids out the ground When it all was over We had to find another place But Swiss time was running out It seemed that we would lose the race.

Smoke On The Water was written and recorded during sessions for Deep Purple's seminal rock album Machine Head in Montreux, Switzerland in December 1971. Deep Purple were watching a Frank Zappa matinee concert in the Montreux Casino concert hall when a flare gun was discharged into the ceiling and started a fire which quickly engulfed and destroyed the venue. The band's roadies saved Deep Purple's gear, parked outside the hall where they were going to start recording their new album the next day. The group escaped with everyone else, and watched the hall burn down
