The Associates (or simply Associates) were a Scottish rock band, formed in Dundee in 1979 by singer Billy Mackenzie and guitarist Alan Rankine. The group first gained recognition after releasing an unauthorized cover of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" in 1979, which landed them a contract with Fiction Records. They followed with their debut album The Affectionate Punch in 1980 and the singles collection Fourth Drawer Down in 1981, both to critical praise.

Version notes: Track A1 features an early fade-out. Tracks A1, A4 and B1 are The Affectionate Punch remixed versions. Track A2 has a fade-in, visible in the first 2 mm of grooves on the vinyl (the original mix does not fade in due to shorter piano intro) but else is the original version from The Affectionate Punch. Tracks A3 and B2 to B5 are the original versions from The Affectionate Punch. Track A4 omits the chattering noise at the end. Track A5 is the Associates - A single remix.

The Affectionate Punch is the debut studio album by Scottish post-punk/new wave band The Associates. It was released on 1 August 1980 by record label Fiction.

The Associates debut LP The Affectionate Punch further cemented their growing reputation as sometimes startling, often enthralling innovators who recognized no musical rules. The booklet features liner notes by Billy MacKenzie biographer Tom Doyle, reproductions of original promotional material and memorabilia, and previously unpublished photos. All ten songs on The Affectionate Punch are nearly swollen with ambition and swagger, yet those attributes are confronted with high levels of anxiety and confusion, the sound of prowess and hormones converging head-on. It's not always pretty, but it's unflaggingly sensational, even when it slows down.

The Affectionate Punch itself opens with what the uncharitable may term Chopsticks piano but which I would place in the lineage of All Tomorrow’s Parties and which soon locks into a groove which makes its point calmly but firmly, like an orator who is capable of commanding a room with a single look. It’s next that the album really gathers momentum. Alan Rankine on ‘The Affectionate Punch’. Associates were arguably the first band to emerge from Linlithgow/Dundee! To what extent, if any, did your hometowns shape your music?
