This is the debut album from this extremely popular American thrash metal band, who were also One of the early piOneers for the genre. They planned to call this first album "Metal Up Your Ass" with the proposed idea of a hand rising from a toilet and holding a knife, for the album art. But Megaforce records talked them into changing that idea, with the title Kill 'Em All, with the album art showing a hand dropping a bloody hammer. They were heavily influenced by the new wave of British heavy metal. Bands like Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Venom, Diamond Head, and so on.
Kill 'Em All is Metallica's debut album, released on July 25, 1983 on Megaforce Records. Metallica's original line-up featured James Hetfield (rhythm guitar/vocals), Lars Ulrich (drums), Ron McGovney (bass), and Dave Mustaine (lead guitar). Because of tensions with Mustaine, McGovney left the band. Castro Valley-born bassist Cliff Burton was recruited as his replacement. Mustaine was fired in April 1983 for his drug and alcohol problems, overly aggressive behavior, and clashes with bandmates.
Kill ‘Em All comprises 10 songs, some of which were taken from previous band demos (Hit The Lights, The Four Horsemen). The sound on offer is, of course, thrash metal, with very prominent punk/core influences. The riffs are mostly fast and shredding, the drums often go for a double-bass approach, and James Hetfield’s voice is shouty and aggressive. But above all, it is the sound of a band growing, trying to find their place in an equally growing music scene. By 1984’s Ride The Lightning, all the elements were in place, and the band were set for a long, illustrious career. This, like Sepultura’s Morbid Visions or Nirvana’s Bleach, remains a document of their infancy, of the time before they were spoken of the world over.
