Where Daughter succeeds most on Not to Disappear is in creating a hazy, dreamy atmosphere with well-produced, otherworldly instrumentation. Where Daughter succeeds most on Not to Disappear is in creating a hazy, dreamy atmosphere with well-produced, otherworldly instrumentation. The guitars pierce through the noise like light through thick fog. Frontwoman Elena Tonra's vocals are another highlight, supplementing the whimsical instrumentation with a subtle beauty. Though the sound has been well crafted, my biggest issue with Not to Disappear is the songwriting.
Daughter could have been forgiven for producing another album like their debut, but they took a brave step in embracing innovation. The beautiful Not to Disappear is their reward, and ours. Despite the dark emotions on display, Not To Disappear is the sort of album that can sound oddly comforting, one to which you can gaze out on a bleak and snowy landscape, while musing over January’s travails, and take some sort of solace in. That’s the sort of thing Daughter do so well.
On their second album Not to Disappear, the indie folk trio Daughter have wisely ditched the notion that seriousness plus reverb equals profound art. The music is expansive and spangly, like staring down a deep well to glimpse a ripple of light on the water. The English indie folk trio Daughter nestled into the void on 2013’s If You Leave, but on Not to Disappear, their second and better record, they fashion their own lifeline back out again.
Daughter – Not to Disappear. Everything is big, everything is a superlative, everything is a catastrophe. Fittingly, the combined efforts of Tonra and Haefeli’s nimble guitar work evokes a sense of dark wonder. In the world of Daughter’s sophomore album, as in their entire canon thus far, everything is big, everything is a superlative, everything is a catastrophe. Not to Disappear builds on many of the same themes that dominated 2013’s If You Leave, but with an added layer of universality. Tonra isn’t just speaking from her own perspective this time; instead, there’s an urgent sense that she’s speaking for everyone who has ever encountered the same emotional quagmire.
Daughter s second album and finds the band making confident strides forward both sonically and lyrically. Elena, Igor and Remi spent this past summer in New York recording Not To Disappear with Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, War On Drugs, Animal Collective) at his Rare Book Room studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This is music that’s built on a sense of brooding fragility, arising from the gentle electronic background sounds, as well as Tonra’s naturally angelic, sensual vocals. Similarities to Exitmusic, Beach House, This Mortal Coil, The XX, Bjork.
The UK indie outfit Daughter comes through with a painfully drab sophomore record. The best album ever existed. 2 months ago. I definitely disagree.
