The badass of jazz bass, Charles Mingus (1922–1979) worked with everyone from Duke Ellington to Langston Hughes. His in-your-face style was informed by bebop, Ellingtonian swing, and the blues of the church. Mingus’ early career focused on the swing and bebop scenes of the ’40s and ’50s. In 1956 he released his first noteworthy album, Pithecanthropus Erectus, which was followed by a string of groundbreaking recordings: The Clown, Mingus Ah Um, and Blues and Roots.
This week features an awesome jazz lick for you to use which I call the Ornithology Lick. This lick refers to Charlie Parker’s bebop composition Ornithology. This tune is actually what we call a contrafact to the jazz standard How High the Moon. Contrafact meaning that it uses the same chord changes of an existing composition, but a completely different melody. This lick uses the last 3-4 bars of Ornithology and works over a iii-VI-ii-V-I chord progression but is originally over a substitution to those changes

He is the drummer on all Jazz Messengers recordings and is therefore elided from personnel listings
The Lick is probably the most famous jazz phrase ever, you will literally start hearing it everywhere once it gets in your ears! . Jazz cliches are everywhere, but I never realized how popular The Lick was until I saw this video below in our forum. The lick is a bebop phrase that is usually played over a minor-key 2-5-1. The origins and the first recording of the lick are not very clear. It is heard in Stravinsky’s Firebird from 1910, but probably dates before that. The jazz guitar chord dictionary (free ebook). In my opinion, still the best live album on the planet. After having quit playing bass for 7 years to focus on drums (from 13 – 20), this album is the reason that I picked it back up again. The thing I love about Jaco Pastorius is that he was coming from an R&B background. He played jazz as if it was soul music, and I think that is the thing that made him so unique. This album is that band at it’s best, I think. Munir Hossn: Made In Nordeste. A masterfully played latin jazz piano trio album and one I reference often in my mind when playing similar styles. Dave Holland: Extensions. This album by Dave Holland killed me back in the day. This was my introduction to Kevin Eubanks, Marvin Smitty Smith, and crew. Aggressive, beautiful, modern, swinging.
