Der Freischütz, Op. 77, J. 277, (usually translated as The Marksman or The Freeshooter) is a German opera with spoken dialogue in three acts by Carl Maria von Weber with a libretto by Friedrich Kind. It premiered on 18 June 1821 at the Schauspielhaus Berlin. It is considered the first important German Romantic opera, especially in its national identity and stark emotionality.

Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst, Freiherr von Weber (18th November 1786–5th June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, and critic, one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school. Weber's works, especially his operas Der Freischütz, Euryanthe, and Oberon, greatly influenced the development of the Romantic opera in Germany. He was also an innovative composer of instrumental music.

Der Freischütz, the most immediately and widely popular German opera that had been written to date, established German Romantic opera. His reputation by now, however, was such that he was able to secure an appointment as director of the German opera at Dresden, beginning in 1817. The same year he married one of his former singers, Caroline Brandt. Weber, Carl Maria vonCarl Maria von Weber featured on a cigarette trading card.

Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). Der Freischütz is one of the great milestones in the history of opera. The resounding success of its premiere in 1821 practically made it a manifesto for German Romantic opera, one that would become a significant formative influence on Wagner. Although it has its roots in the Singspiel tradition exemplified by Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Der Freischütz cut new ground with its potent mixture of supernatural elements, dreams, folk melodies, evocations of nature, and symphonic tone painting.

Carl Maria von Weber: Der Freischütz. This recording was made in April 2012 from a pair of live performances of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz at London's Barbican, and just a year later the great British conductor Colin Davis was dead at 85. The continuing high quality of his music-making in old age, in something as taxing as a full-length operatic score, deserves study in itself, and this release, apparently the last of his numerous operatic recordings (including at least one other Der Freischütz), is certainly a worthy conclusion to the oeuvre.
