The Stooges is the debut studio album by American rock band The Stooges. It was released on August 5, 1969, by Elektra Records. The Stooges was released on August 5, 1969, by record label Elektra.

A typical Stooges song of the period would involve two minutes of composed song followed by several minutes of improvisation. Having assumed that the five songs as normally performed would cover requirements for the album, the Stooges were told by their record label

While the Stooges had a few obvious points of influence - the swagger of the early Rolling Stones, the horny pound of the Troggs, the fuzztone sneer of a thousand teenage garage bands, and the Velvet Underground's experimental eagerness to leap into the void - they didn't really sound like anyone else around when their first album hit the.

Listen free to The Stooges – The Stooges (1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog and more). The Stooges is the self-titled debut studio album by American rock band The Stooges. It was released in August 1969 on Elektra Records. Two songs, "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "1969", were released as singles and the album peaked at number 106 on the Billboard album charts. It is widely considered one of the best proto-punk albums

The Stooges got to make their self-titled debut album when Elektra Records publicist Danny Fields came to Michigan to sign the MC5 and ended up signing signing both bands. The album was produced by former Velvet Underground bassist John Cale, and was rumored to have been half-written the night before the first recording session. It was a commercial and critical failure at the time, despite introducing the world to what would become one of the most influential bands in rock history. The Stooges Q&A.

I don't understand why this would be labeled as a misprint version. What is the misprint? It was very common for bands/artists to make all sorts of changes to a record between the time WLPs were distributed and the record's official release to the public. Sometimes cover artwork was determined in that time, sometimes songs were re-recorded or different mixes of songs were used, sometimes whole songs were deleted, and sometimes new/different songs were added. The fact that this WLP has songs in a different order than the commercially sold release does not make it a misprint.
  • Gldasiy
I see the band's name on both labels (side 1 & side 2) in the images you included with this entry. Where's the misprint?
  • Wymefw
is it the blue sign on the label originally printed or is it something the owner left with a merker? Because mine seems to be this release but it òacs that thing...
  • Arihelm
I am pretty sure all copies with brown / red wax are actually recent reissues (repress). I do not know if it is an official reissue or not, but in any case it is of excellent quality : cover is as pefect as the original and record is very thick. I have one copy and sound is very good however as I do not own an original copy so I cannot compare
  • Tori Texer
I found this second hand cover but the record is the American pressing CTH. Does anyone have the same ?
  • Watikalate
I have copy of this, what year was it released?
  • Tenius
Solid pressing, 180g, sounds great, just one of those that definitely FEELS like a re-issue. Can't really put my finger on why.
  • Vital Beast
A classic LP for sure! And, this press is definitely the one to get. Dead quiet, great dynamic range and separation, just all around beautiful sound. I don't have an original to compare to, but this version definitely does have the best sound to me. Maybe one day if I'm lucky I'll find an original so I can compare them.
  • Hellblade
This release should be tagged as unnoficial as it is clearly a counterfeit. Cover and specially labels (French Electra butterfly label) have a photocopy look, and the sound is CD like. I purchased my copy in a Spanish mail order back in the year 2000, and it was part of a batch of reissues of punk rock albums, most of them unavailable in those days. So I believe they were all European pressings.
  • Bludsong
i bid for one thinking it a french 72..got it for 19 euro..so not the end of the world...mine is a mustard marble vinyl..anyone else??
  • Ttexav
I just bought this vinyl and it includes a voucher to download the digital format of this album, but the thing is the website don't even exists anymore... Does anyone knows if there is a way to redeem codes from "www.thisisvinylcollector.com" ?
  • Braendo
Couldn’t be happier with how this one sounds. Another knock out by Rhino.
  • Gavirim

Just picked this up, amazing sound, cool looking vinyl, a classic. Everyone should have a copy of this.
  • Niwield
Hi, I need some help, my own have the same matrix but not the butterfly, it looks the same as 1970 reissue of (white Elektra logo)
  • Ustamya
You probably have a promo copy that's not listed. Does it say anywhere on the record like "Radio Station Copy" or "Not for Sale"?
  • Flocton
THIS IS THE ON TO GO FOR. SOUNDS GREAT AND WILL NOT ROB YOU FINACIALLY( like Third Man Records reissues )!
  • Getaianne
This version has different songs on the second album. And the TMR reissue is as low as $40 here on Discogs (Oct 2018). Which is only $10 over the TMR store price.
  • Envias
I paid 30$ for the thirdman 2xlp version. Seemed fair to me.
  • Sadaron above the Gods
The sane 2lp version of Elektra / Warner reissue from 2005, with a difference: THIS ONE IS WAY MORE EXPENSIVE !Does it sound better then 2005 reissue ? No, but that is not a point. It's about cashing in.Or should we translate it: IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY !If you think of original Stoogees, only one thing comes to mind - P A T H E T I C !
  • Grillador
US release split off this European release. It has moved here -- The Stooges - The Stooges
  • Jelar
Quiet, clean pressing. Bonus lp is a nice companion. I think I paid $25, and I'm happy. I also own an 80's and the original remaster pressing. Hell, there all good!
  • Lyrtois
This press is beautiful and sounds the same. Warm and loud without any surface noise. Very happy with the quality.
  • Thordira
There is a handwritten "CB" in the deadwax. Presumably these lacquers were made by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman.
  • Kelezel
Can anybody compare it to the colored vinyl from rhino rocktober? 2016 i guess. Thanks. Is RSD edition better?
  • Daiktilar
The first record is the exact same pressing. So not much different if anything.
  • Nikok
I was on the fence of getting this one; I didn't need to spend more money. But, I can say that it is fantastic and well worth every penny.
  • showtime
Didn't know the stooges could sound so good. great pressing.
  • Bloodhammer
Amazing sound from this pressing. Quiet in between songs, sounds energetic and raw.
  • Winotterin
Anyone know how this sounds? I have it and wasn't sure on if I really should hold onto it or return it since i have another pressing.
  • Thoginn
From what I understand record store day purchases cannot be returned
  • Cordantrius
I have nothing to compare this pressing to, but I can see no flaws in it. The sound floor is quiet. The lp's are clean and free of defects. There is a genuine raw and energetic delight in this presentation. The guitar work is gobsmacking, the drumming is spare and primal, and the younger Iggy seems to be acting the part of a "team player" in this ensemble; which only adds to the whole package. The dynamics are thoroughly engaging. This lp set is delightful.
  • Minnai
I'm listening to mine later. I'll let you know how that goes. My reference copy is an '80s Canadian pressing.
  • Gavinranara
Great sound very good repress 1000 times better than the shit Sundaze A must have LP!
  • Fordrekelv
I got this on black vinyl with the matrixcode 42032-A. The cover and the label are exactly the same. Bootleg or not?
  • Doomredeemer
I have a small maple leaf on the upper right back, so I believe mine is an Canadian pressing.
  • Dusho
fantastic sound (word word word word word word word word)
  • Zulurr
I have a 1st press in minty condition I found without the cover. If anyone has an empty cover they'd be willing to sell me let me know. Og or early pressing only w/out barcode, thanks!
  • Impala Frozen
I don't know if you're still looking for a cover but someone's selling one right now! https://www.discogs.com/sell/item/747025344
  • TheMoonix
Comment to question of the 1970 version of The Stooges being the 1st. No that wouldn't be the 1st, as that came out in 1969.
  • Bumand
Sound is incredible. Kind of lazy job pasting the label on mine but otherwise fantastic. Appealing colour for the vinyl too.
  • Thomeena
Hands down the best pressing and listening experience I've had of this vinyl rocket. Hard hitting as never before, dynamic, detailed, VERY saturated, and layered like a wedding cake. I also couldn't detect a single crackle or pop. Enjoyed on a Thorens TD-150 equipped with an ATN125LC.
  • Bad Sunny
An AWESOME repress! amazingly live and real sound with really cool vinyl? Yes please!
  • Ynneig
This pressing sounds like God. My goodness. Can't imagine how it could sound better.
  • Tygralbine
Any reviews over the sound of it ? ? ?
  • Hidden Winter
As previously stated, the cover is very thin and flimsy. BUT, sound quality on this is actually really great! I'm very pleasantly surprised.
  • Orevise
150 bux seriously ,,,, should be ashamed of themselves ... classic it maybe but reissues are 25 max!
  • Bundis
Curious how many were pressed of this edition. Any ideas?
  • Sataxe
Without a remastered version who will get us even more goosebumps...this is just a repress in a high-end new plant ?!Mmm...and with this price you can buy maybe 3-4 remastered albums..So...not for me.
  • Teonyo
To put it simply, this sounds INCREDIBLE. I would recommend it to anyone.
  • Wooden Purple Romeo
I got an 8-track of this album. Mine is not white its is olive green and numbers are ET8 4051. Can anyone help me out with this?
  • Kanrad
i have a copy of this lp with the same runout matrix numbers, but my copy has the stooges written on the label plus a 1970 elektra inner sleeve. positive this is a first issue?
  • Awene
I think there is a bootleg from 2015/16 in circulation, that is very similar to this release. Front and back cover, labels, printings and vinyl colour look exactly the same. So if you pick up a very new looking piece of this release, don't be so excited just be sceptical, because a release this old would have some traces of use. To be sure, compare the matrix etchings.
  • Frei
The i got a bootleg :-(, but the sound is still good
  • Windbearer
Hi Big Earl, I´m driving crazy myself trying to find an old copy of this album and also of Fun House but, I don´t want any bootleg, I really don´t like their sound and last reissues are most probably bad quality sound!. I don´t care if it´s not first press, just want an old one before of the 80s. Could you give me a hand?
  • Mr.Bean
Does anyone have fotos from the label an the back cover? please add them. Thanks
  • Ylal
Anyone know who cut this and is the pressing good?
  • Rgia
Yes! Mine sounds amazing too! I was a bit nervous about it because I had real bad luck with this one: https://www.discogs.com/The-Stooges-Fun-House/release/9587656
  • Topmen
Ian Sefchick. Sounds good to me. I don't own the previous Rhino version or any other version, so I can't compare.
  • fr0mTheSkY
Record appears more smoke / clear than brown and gold. See my added photo.
  • Gom
If you look at it against a source of light it will appear gold/brown.
  • Mikale
Any printed inner sleeves or blank black or white? :)
  • Nten
Good call, my record looks like smoke as well, clear and black but still transparent.
  • Tuliancel
Looks like Rhino updated their site to show that it's actually "clear and black swirl" not brown and gold.
  • Breder
Agreed! Mine looks like clear with black smoke to me as well!
  • Thetahuginn
How does this Rhino repress sound? Is it worth getting?
  • greatest
It sounds awesome. Very quiet and full, I'd recommend picking it up.
  • DART-SKRIMER
I've never had this album on vinyl. I used to have it on cassette. I'd first heard 'No Fun' by the Sex Pistols and had to hear the original and was blown away by the rawness of the Stooges! Great killer first album!
  • Xlisiahal
What innersleeve does the canadian pressing have? Mine has a regular white inner.
  • Мох
Mine's still in the shrinkwrap and has a (very old) plain white sleeve, so assuming that's how it came.
  • Aurizar
My copy is like another variant of the Mould SID Code, i.e, IFPI 05A3.
  • Dawncrusher
cover is very thin, record is in semi-fitted plastic sleeve. handle with care!
  • Haralem
Does anyone has more info about this repress of the album (e.g Barcode and Other Identifiers, Manufactured and Distributed by etc.) or any other pictures? Thank You for Your help.
  • Kefrannan
I go with the discography here placing it at 1972, but i am sure a little online research could confirm either way.
  • Alsath
And what about the year? Do You know the year of its release? I think I have the same release that's why I'm asking. Thank You for Your answer.
  • Togar
I have what I think is this release. No barcode. Red Elektra label, Above the hole on the label it reads The Stooges and above that is the old Elektra logo. Made in Canada printed bottom of label. On back cover black Canadian Maple Leaf logo on top left, Made in Canada printed with credits.
  • Very Old Chap
Very flat sounding. Not sure if it's the mastering or the original material but it doesn't sound good at all.
  • Hiclerlsi
I have a copy with this catalogue # but with emerald green vinyl, same pressing?
  • Galanjov
Date of Issue 1972? Printed in France? Which condition NM?
  • Mbon
Does anybody know anything about this record with The Smiths on the b-side? I bought it new in the middle of the 80`s.
  • Binthars
Gruvanka Does anybody know anything about this record with The Smiths on the b-side? I bought it new in the middle of the 80`s. Does it have a Smiths side on the b-side? What record and side by The Smiths is it?
  • Moswyn
How is this any different than the original 1969 pressings? It even has the same matrix etchings as promo copies.
  • SmEsH
I'm convinced this isn't a repress, but was around at the same time as the pressing without The Stooges logo on the label. Mine has the original black inner sleeve with the Elektra photos on it. This inner references 'the architects rendering will be fully realised in the fall of 1969', so it's from earlier than that. It's also been deletion hole punched and the hole matches the outer sleeve, so it hasn't ever been swapped.
  • Zan
From what I can tell, the original pressings don't have "The Stooges" logo on the labels.
  • Xtani
my copy has cat# 8122-73237-1?
  • Jan
What's the best pressing of this on vinyl?
  • Zicelik
probably the Sundazed reissue in terms of sound quality as they only press from the original masters.
  • Uaoteowi
Which of the two 1969 pressings is considered a "first" pressing? Or are the label variations of the Red E just from different plants?
  • Mash
My guess is they are just from different plants, as it was kinda usual in the US and as both variations can bee seen on tan labels as well.
  • Precious
the john cale mixes are mastered at the wrong speed...between 8-10% too slow
  • PanshyR
according to the booklet, they are the correct "john cale" speed as he had handed them over to electra for release. electra went back and remixed and remastered before release. knowing what was said about cale during this time period it could be intentional that they were at this speed.

This album is the debut release of Michigan's now famous Stooges - although at the time they were quite vilified for their minimalist and droning approach. The actual sound engineering on this record has often been overlooked and it represents quite an exquisite capturing of an experimental and chaos driven guitar band of 1969. John Cale, who produced the album, adds a tasty Velvets flavoured Viola across "We Will Fall" which is a slow mystic chant over a quiet wah guitar lines. An odd piece, more than likely filler to make up the Stooges lack of actual songs at the time, it nonetheless fits stylistically with the rest of the album and still holds a charm of its own viewed almost 40 years on. The late Ron Asheton's guitar playing across the rest of the album is crisp and tasty three chord powerage with scuffling and squalling lead lines that hint strongly at his finer playing that would emerge on album two, 1970's 'Funhouse'. Asheton throughout maintains locked in with his with brother Scott on rolling and clattering drums, bassist Dave Alexanders rubbery and succinct bass lines, and the monotonal delivery of vocalist Iggy Pop. Pop's own recollection of the creation of classic "No Fun" recounts that it was based on Johnny Cash's "I walk the line" with a similar meter - and with a stipulated 25 words per song makes it the archetypal blueprint for the later punk explosion which occurred across the world in the mid 70's. Some of the tunes are certainly stronger than others but the stand out tunes of "1969", "Real Cool Time", and "Little Doll" make this an album to return to again and again.
