2120 South Michigan Avenue" is an original instrumental by the Rolling Stones recorded for their second EP Five by Five. It was also released on their second US album 12 X 5 in 1964. In the book Rolling with the Stones, Bill Wyman recalls that the composition process started with him playing a bass riff and that the others followed on jamming.
2120 South Michigan Avenue by The Rolling Stones. "2120 South Michigan Avenue" is not a song that tops the list of the Stones' most popular, but it is a grooving tune that shows off the band's infectious enthusiasm and acts as interesting landmark in the their development. With "2120 South Michigan Avenue," we hear a band on the cusp of superstardom paying homage to the music that influenced them. It would be only a few more years before they'd cement their own legacy as one of the most significant bands to ever record at Chess Records. Chess Records was an American record company, founded in 1950 in Chicago and specializing in blues and rhythm and blues. Over time it expanded into soul music, gospel music, early rock and roll, and occasional jazz and comedy recordings, released on the Chess label and on its subsidiary labels Checker, Argo/Cadet and Cadet Concept. The entire Chess catalogue is currently owned by Universal Music Group and managed by Geffen Records.
This is the quintessential Chicago blues album. If you can only own one blues recording, this is the one it should be. It's an American blues music masterpiece, representing the best of the Chicago blues' scene at its peak. A remarkable display of talent is showcased on this stellar record. It highlights the true genius of Chicago blues. The album works equally well as an introduction for newcomers to the genre as well as a cornerstone for those with voluminous Chicago blues record collections. It is my pick for all-time greatest Chicago blues album. I first listened to it around 1968 at a friend's house over a speaker that was scotch taped together and dangling from its wires, which is maybe appropriate for blues listening.
