Why Can't I?" and "Extraordinary" were released as singles. Phair began production on the album with Michael Penn. Liz Phair debuted at on the Billboard 200. As of July 2010, the album had sold 433,000 copies.
Toward the end of 1996, she began to work on her third album, but it took her nearly a year and a half to compete it, due to a variety of reasons. When gg (a reference to her baby boy's shiny bald head) finally appeared in late summer 1998, it had been a full five years since Exile in Guyville, and nowhere was that more apparent than in Phair's third album itself. Certain familiar elements remained - her plain vocals, strummed guitars, and character songs - but this was a brighter, cleaner, more content Phair.

Liz Phair (born Elizabeth Clark Phair on April 17, 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. She was a cornerstone in the underground early '90s indie rock movement for her songcraft and DIY ethics. Her sound developed at the turn of the century into something more akin to pop or adult contemporary.
In 1993 a twenty-six-year-old Liz Phair burned her image onto the post-feminist landscape with Exile in Guyville, an album that perfectly captured the experiences of young women stranded between puberty and adulthood. Phair herself embodied the contradictions of contemporary chickdom: She cursed sexism while reveling in her own sexuality, acted tough but suffered from debilitating stage fright. The five years since have been frenetic for Phair in ways that have nothing - and everything - to do with her music. But years from now, they may well hoard copies of gg and marvel at its prescient insights into their post-hipster lives. By then, of course, Phair will have reared her space egg and traded in her empty nest for an RV and the open highway, her stereo cranked up as she belts out a host of pre-menopausal anthems.
Liz Phair was, after all, the same person who’d landed herself on the cover of Rolling Stone with an independently released debut album, winning critics polls and attaining verifiable cult-star status in the process. And the songs on Exile In Guyville and Whip-Smart were real songs, too. This wasn’t a Guided By Voices situation where you could see the great pop songs buried under all the lo-fi murk. The Phair of gg was simply not the Phair who had made Exile In Guyville. Phair was no longer singing about wanting to be anyone’s blowjob queen, and some people took that personally.
gg (or gg as typeset on the cover art) is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Liz Phair, released in 1998 Contents. Rolling Stone called it "engagingly intimate" while at the same time "playful and pop-y, with just enough dry humor.
