High Octane Cult is a United States and Japan greatest hits compilation featuring every single The Cult had released at the time, with the additional "Beauty's on the Street" and "In the Clouds". It was released by The Cult's then record company Beggars Banquet Records without The Cult's participation

Even though the Cult make a valid argument for being one of the most artistically, self-defeatist bands in music history, whereby, they continuously confused and alienated their audience by changing direction, one certainly can't argue with the wealth of primo material here on display. Like all good greatest-hits or best-of collections, taken as a thread, these songs still sound great.

High Octane Cult (compilation) (1996)High Octane Cult1996. Vocalist Ian Astbury referred to the record as "very personal, and very revealing" songs about his life, with the subject matter ranging from sexual abuse at the age of 15, to the death of Nigel Preston (friend and former drummer for The Cult), to his directionless years spent in Glasgow in the late 1970s. But the record was barely noticed, only reaching US and UK and then quickly dropping out of sight. Reportedly it reached number one on the charts in Portugal, but quickly dropped out of sight as well.

High Octane Cult wisely focuses on the band's better years, from the release of Love in 1985 to Sonic Temple in 1989, including hits like "Fire Woman" and "She Sells Sanctuary. The fact that the latter turned up in a car commercial both indicates the Cult's position in the pop-metal pantheon and serves as a depressing reminder of the fate of much guitar-oriented rock.
